All believers have to pass through dark tunnels before they eventually see the light. We do not want to suffer trials, but only wish to see our prayers answered. We want to only see rainbows, but forget that rain has to come before that.

The reason many believers experience the "mountains and valleys" in life is that we are not prepared for bad times, but only thank God for the good times. However, w/o suffering, how will God deliver us from pain, danger and disappointments?
