There are times when we have make a grammatical mistake here and there, and have been subject to rightful mockery.

It is the inevitable baggage that comes with getting paid to write on a public space.

One of the more notable critics of English in recent months has been the aptly titled Facebook page "Singaporean Influencers and Bloggers Write SHIT English and are Annoying AF" or SIBWSEA.

The page mostly skewers blog posts they deem to have less than ideal English.

An example is their December 19 post on Seth-Lui.com, a food blog.

Here is a hallmark of SIBWSEA's style, pick out an excerpt from an article, and highlight the problems with it.

Excerpt

"Each worked in tandem to balance the other out; sweet from the dressing to distract spicy from the Tomyam powder and sour from the lime to censor out excessive sweetness. It was a good choice to have this first to incite our palate for the remainder of the meal. I definitely recommend everyone to order this in their first time here."

Critique

1) 'Censor'? You mean 'balance'.

2) 'Incite'? This isn't a riot or a revolution.

3) 'in their first time here'? 'On their first time here'!

Excerpt

"I like how 1933 has a niche in continually able to create dips/sauces with multiple dimensions into them."

Critique

'a niche in continually able to create'.... what? 狗屁不通。(Translation: Your attempt at communication is like a dog having constipation.)

Damn.

Seth Lui's response

Seth Lui, the man behind the website, Seth-Lui.com, apparently took offense to their critique.

Well, SIBWSEA, picked up on that recently, and posted this rather more direct response.

A good chunk of Lui's comments consisted of people standing up for the right to point out grammatical mistakes.

The comment section of SIBWSEA, understandably so, also agreed with the act of pointing out less than ideal English.

It ain't just his half past six English, he likes to post fake news too.

The control that large corporations once possessed over communication and media channels is now in the hands of technically savvy influencers who analyse and evaluate products and services that brands have little control over. New media replaced trust in brand advertisements with peer opinion from about 10 years ago. Positioning products and services through brand slogans is becoming less effective. Unfortunately, this new level of transparency that once forced businesses to listen to what consumers want, has now been replaced by skepticism as influencers are writing positive reviews according to how much businesses pay them.

Grammar mistakes don't bother me as much as lying does. Although it is grammatically acceptable, the statement "cotton comes from sheep" is far from reality.

You were rather indignant when Seth Lui and The Hungry CEO took your photos. You implied that they draw up lists from hearsay, without visiting the places. A writer with integrity should eat at all places before drawing up a list so they should have photos of their own. Can you explain why you’re indignant over the photos?

I am a Stock Photographer and perhaps that somewhat explained why I do not like my pictures to be used without my given permission, even if they provide the link to be directed back to my blog.

I actually made special effort to shoot that particular picture used by the writer from Sethlui.com. That picture is taken at Tien Lai Rice Stall at Taman Jurong Food Centre and that stall is usually sold out by noon. In order to get that picture, I had to be there rather early and queued for 30 minutes so it just doesn’t quite make sense for them to just use it. It is again about responsible writing so it does not justify nor encourage such action.

Chan Chun Sing was confused by the product called cotton wool. Thank God he is no longer Education Minister. Hahaha!
