Mild earthquake struck Segamat in Johor

PETALING JAYA: An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 struck Johor early on Sunday morning (Aug 24).

The earthquake occurred at 6.13 am, according to a statement from the Meteorological Department.

“The epicentre was located at 2.5° North and 102.8° East with a depth of 10 km, 5 km west of Segamat.

“The tremors were felt in many areas of Johor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, and southern Pahang.”

MetMalaysia said it will continue to monitor this situation.

THE Johor state government is closely monitoring developments following a minor earthquake that struck Segamat at approximately 6:13am today, registering a magnitude of 4.1.

Johor Menteri Besar, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, stated that he had contacted Segamat District Officer, Mohd Ezzuddin bin Sanusi, who confirmed that there have been no reported casualties or damage to property.

"I have been in contact with Tuan Haji Mohd Ezzuddin bin Sanusi, the District Officer of Segamat, and have been informed that, as of now, there are no reports of casualties or property damage," he said in a post on platform X this morning.

"The Johor State Government is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the relevant agencies," he added.

He also urged the public to steer clear of unstable structures and remain alert to official instructions.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has confirmed that the earthquake's epicentre was located 5 kilometres from Segamat at a depth of 10 kilometres. It added that tremors were felt in several parts of Johor, as well as in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and southern Pahang.

MetMalaysia will continue to conduct close monitoring and issue updates as necessary.

JOHOR BARU: The Johor government has urged the public to stay away from unsafe structures and remain alert to instructions from the authorities following the earthquake detected in Segamat at 6.13am on Sunday (Aug 24).

Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said he had contacted Segamat district officer Mohd Ezzuddin Sanusi, who confirmed that no casualties or property damage had been reported so far.

"The state government is monitoring the situation closely with the relevant agencies. My advice to the people is to avoid weak structures and always heed instructions from the authorities.

"The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) will continue to carry out close monitoring and provide updates from time to time,” he said in a Facebook post on Sunday morning.

Onn Hafiz also called on the public to pray for Johor and the country to be spared from disasters.

Meanwhile, State Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said MetMalaysia had issued a statement on the incident.

He said the 4.1-magnitude quake was felt in many parts of Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and southern Pahang. - Bernama
 
if it does not lie in major fault line or live volcano mountain, it maybe be due to some underground nuke test causing the turbulences
