Food waste from 6 million people resulting in a growing rat infestation in S'pore

There is a growing rodent problem in S'pore with many stallholders admitting that it is impossible for hawker centres and coffee shops to have no rats. Hawkers I have spoken to claim that they make their stalls as clean as possible, but rats have been seen running on the beams and around the premises. They appear after the lights are switched off, but seldom seen when there are people around. New York City has an estimated 5 times the number of rodents compared to their population of 8 million people, while S'pore has more than 6 million residents in a land area that is significantly smaller. Imagine how many rats we have in hiding during the day.

The rats at People's Park Complex are bold enough to search for food even during the day.

SInkie is very successful in population control until going into negative population, hope they can apply it to the rodents too then can shut the hawker mouth up

Some times they fog the drains at Jurong west and there will be tons of rats scampering and squeaking for their lives in the huge drain next to the bus stop

Remi is sniffing around. Too many places with rats running around these days openly. All thanks to people who thinks feeding pigeons and stray cats are gd deeds
I used to eat at Beauty World Food Centre regularly, but stopped doing so after seeing rats climbing into the false ceiling
and the common areas even during the daytime. I once noticed a rat on a beam defecating onto a closed stall below.

Soon, Singapore will be the city of plague
There was a serious rat infestation beside Bukit Batok MRT station 11 years ago with more than 140 rodents caught after only 3 days with many more killed by the pest exterminators. The authorities claimed that food left behind for stray dogs contributed to the rat infestation. Dog feeders provided about 10 kg of food which attracted the rats to the forested area beside the MRT station.

The 140 rodents are those which are found. Who knows where exactly their nests are

Rats running around freely at night out of their hiding places.
I remember once taking a short cut through a deserted hawker centre late at night to go home when I was a student, and was startled by the number of rats roaming on the tables and floor. Leftovers on plates and bowls were scattered on the tables and ground. Those were the days before it was mandatory to clear our own crockery and trays.

Forested areas are where most burrows are. As a boy, I recall excavation being carried out to build apartment blocks nearby resulting in many rodents slipping into my parents' semi-detached home. The whole family was terrified by the uninvited visitors.

There are people who grumble about the mandatory clearing their plates and trays. I think it’s better than before with more tables and seats around during lunch and dinner time because people clear their plates and trays

I remember how my colleagues and I had to clear all the used crockery and utensils left behind by vacating diners before we could even order our lunch. Frankly, it was disgusting as there would be soiled tissue paper to dispose as well. As we didn't have a cloth, we had to ask the cleaner to wipe the table; the cloth they used would be dirty and spread the grease around the table so we avoided resting our arms on it.

Even squirrels are not climbing trees, but are scavenging rubbish bins for food nowadays.

This is what happens when you cut down many trees to build more crap.

As I live along Dunearn Road, I can testify to a few incidents when pedestrians had plastic bags snatched from their hands by pesky monkeys who find it more rewarding than scavenging for leftovers in bins at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.
