Why some bosses deliberately find fault with capable subordinates?

If you see a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that is a post turtle. It didn't get up there by itself. It doesn't belong up there. It's out of its comfort zone. It doesn't know what to do while it's up there. It's stuck and unproductive. You just wonder what kind of dumbass put it there in the first place! A post turtle is in a position of power that he didn't achieve through his own efforts. Someone put him there. He lacks the necessary skills, knowledge or understanding to perform effectively. He is stuck, like a turtle on a post. The term is used to point out cronyism in leadership roles.

Insecure bosses need to have sub-standard subordinates around them? This is definitely true. Small SMEs directors with low education are even worse!

In the corporate world, meritocracy means hiring and promoting the most capable employees into leadership positions, based exclusively on their competency. If cronyism is practiced, the talented are shown that their performance and capability are irrelevant to their appraisal and promotion. Disenchantment quickly leads to burnout. Most may stop giving their best at work or simply leave the company in frustration.

Some I notice can be very jealous of those with more experience or those who have better qualifications than them so to me I just take it as work place is just to earn a living that is all.
I once had a boss who was so insecure that he regularly walked around the staff car park, and inquired what make and model of cars his subordinates were driving.

This basic philosophy to have the most skilled and driven at the top appears to be lost to most companies. In unhealthy workplaces, it is not uncommon to have workers with the best ideas overlooked for advancement while the mediocre or even underperforming employees get promoted.
You just described the Pee and poo administration

The results of favoritism are clear. Companies are hit with a double whammy: the loss of genuine talent to competitors and being left with a management team that lacks the requisite skills and who never challenge their boss. This results in poor decision-making. The consequences of cronyism are extensive and may even destroy a company, since it inevitably leads to a brain drain.

Unfortunately, in practice. Most of the time, competent business owners and superiors are few. I am not very educated. But I noticed brain drain loss is very noticeable in very large or very small organisations most of the time. Think time for me to strike out on my own outside of Singapore.

This type too free and too kaypoh. Jia lat. Does he also monitor how long people go Pang Sai in the toilet?

True. The one who carry the most balls, often clueless about what to do and no one can seemingly touch him or her. Common in many work places.
Hiring and promoting close allies gives the impression that the CEO is weak and requires a network of supporters to strengthen his position. Cronyism casts aspersions on a boss’ judgment and ethics when recruits lack the requisite skills, knowledge and experience, which will become apparent over time.

When the CEO hires deputies from his previous organisation, the process appears based on existing personal relationships rather than qualifications. The adverse effects on the morale of the rest of the management team and staff are far-reaching.

I have this friend who once spoke to a higher mgt about some issues but the higher Mgt than only saying sorry, he doesn’t seem to care at all and claims he is busy and push my friend to his underlinings and his underlinings all became very rude towards my friend and start all kinds of accusations at her.

This is terrible leadership? Yes. Total failure as I was listening and thinking what the hell. Glad my classmates all heard that conversation to know what kind of people are there and only care abt themselves

There are places where the husband and wife are hire together in management level as well or a whole clan-ish of former villagers. Get used to it. It’s very common as long as no one question than you know also

If mid-management and workers assume that favoritism is at play, they will be less inclined to give of their best. Indifference and resentment will inevitably lead to a reduction in productivity and higher staff turnover.

This happens not just in family businesses, but SMEs and charities as well. Actually, it happens even in large public sector organizations like SMRT, where senior military officers who do not have any grasp of the profit motive are appointed to senior management positions. The "global search" of a CEO for SMRT never seems to extend beyond our SAF camps. LOL!

Idk where you are based most of time. But Singapore white collared culture is CMI. I had BETTER experience from OWNERS working blue collared jobs in Australia. Shall digress here.

Already post covid, sheeple still talking about corporate slavery. Those who are wise, will want to run as far as possible
