Economists often say that the stock market isn’t the economy. Stocks can move up and down in tandem with or in contrast to underlying economic trends. That nuance hasn’t been lost on retail investors, who are cutting back on spending to protect themselves from a softening economy, even as they are investing more.

These findings come from a June survey from Finimize, a platform offering information for retail investors. It polled 2,338 investors and found that 70% expect global stock markets to grow over the next 12 months, while 67% expect cryptocurrencies to grow. This is a notable jump in confidence since the last Finimize survey, which was taken during the second quarter of 2025, as tariffs and trade wars were pushing markets lower.
