US president Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he was aiming for a “real end” to the conflict between arch-rivals Israel and Iran, and not just a ceasefire, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reports.

The president said he was looking for “an end, a real end, not a ceasefire,” adding that he wanted a “complete give-up” by Iran.

Trump also said on Truth Social that he had not reached out to Iran for peace talks in any “way, shape, or form”, adding that the country “should have taken the deal that was on the table”.

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE — U.S. President Donald Trump wants the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran to end in a “complete give-up” by Tehran on nuclear weapons, rejecting suggestions that he might be eager to negotiate a temporary ceasefire in the Middle East.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One after abruptly cutting short his time at the G7 summit in Canada on Monday, Trump praised the Israeli offensive and insisted that Iran’s nuclear capabilities needed to be wiped out.

“A complete give-up, it’s possible,” Trump said of his preferred end to the fighting, adding he wanted “not a ceasefire, a real end” to the conflict. “I’m not too much in a mood to negotiate.”

Trump’s remarks came shortly after he blasted French President Emmanuel Macron in a Truth Social post for suggesting that he was returning to Washington early to try to finalize a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.

The president’s comments also underscored his hardening support for Israel’s extended assault, despite his past anti-war rhetoric and a growing backlash within his MAGA base over the U.S. involvement in the Middle East.

“I’m not looking for a ceasefire, we’re looking at better than a ceasefire,” Trump said, reiterating his criticism of Macron as a “nice guy” who “doesn’t get it right too often.”

Still, Trump offered few specifics about what that end might look like. He suggested that his approach would be determined by the events of the next couple days.

Trump planned to convene his advisers in the Situation Room early Tuesday, he said, and confirmed that he has considered dispatching Vice President JD Vance and Steve Witkoff, his Middle East envoy, to meet with Iranian officials.

He also continued to criticize Iran for failing to negotiate a nuclear deal in time to stave off the Israeli attack.

President Trump said he was working on “a real end” to the conflict in the Middle East, as the U.S. expanded its military footprint in the region where the war between Israel and Iran entered a fifth day.

“Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. It’s very simple,” he told reporters on Air Force One as he returned to Washington early from the G-7 summit in Canada. “We’ll come down so hard if they do anything to our people…I think they know not to touch our troops.”

Trump left the meeting in Canada after signing onto a G-7 statement calling for peace and stability in the Middle East, saying he wasn’t doing so to work on a cease-fire but something “much bigger than that.” Asked to clarify, Trump said he wanted “an end, a real end, not a cease-fire.”

The White House said the U.S. isn’t joining Israel’s attacks on Iran, amid speculation fueled by recent military buildup in the region. Trump earlier wrote on Truth Social that everyone should evacuate from Tehran. Speaking on Air Force One, he said that his call for the evacuation was based on wanting “people to be safe.”

A third U.S. Navy destroyer entered the eastern Mediterranean Sea to help defend Israel from Iranian ballistic missiles, and a second U.S. carrier strike group is heading toward the Arabian Sea. Tanker aircraft that could potentially help refuel Israeli jet fighters also appeared to be heading to the region, according to flight trackers and people familiar with the matter.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said he had directed “the deployment of additional capabilities” to the Middle East to enhance U.S. forces’ “defensive posture” in the region.

While the Pentagon says the military buildup is purely defensive, it puts the U.S. on a firmer footing to join Israeli attacks on Iran should Trump decide to do that. Alternatively, it could be a tactic to pressure Iran to capitulate or make concessions.
