The setting sun was blinding drivers on the Arizona interstate between Flagstaff and Phoenix in November 2023. Johna Story was traveling with her daughter and a co-worker in a black Toyota 4Runner around a curve that turned directly into the glaring sunlight. They pulled over to help direct traffic around two cars that had crashed.

Back before that curve, Karl Stock was behind the wheel of a red Tesla Model Y. He had engaged what the carmaker calls Full Self-Driving, or FSD — a partial-automation system Elon Musk had acknowledged 18 months earlier was a high-stakes work in progress.

In a few harrowing seconds, the system’s shortcomings were laid bare by a tragedy. The Tesla hit Story, a 71-year-old grandmother, at highway speed. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tesla’s cars are once again involved in the most accidents according to a study by LendingTree insurance. It found that Tesla drivers are involved in more accidents than drivers of any other brand. Some of these accidents involved Tesla’s self-driving system. Nationally, Tesla drivers had 26.67 accidents per 1,000 drivers. This was up from 23.54 last year.

The Ram and Subaru brands were again among the most accident-prone. Ram had 23.15 per 1,000 drivers while Subaru had 22.89.

The study is based on QuoteWizard by LendingTree insurance inquiries from Jan. 1, 2024, through Dec. 31, 2024. They analyzed the 30 brands with the most inquiries in this period. This study categorizes drivers based on inquiries made for those brands.

That news was by Forbes.

The incident occurred in 2023. The FSD at the time was not designed for driverless cars. It was for supervised level 3 autonomy. IE FSD11.

We are now on FSD 13 which is AI powered and is on the hardware 4 platform in the robotaxis.

Thanks but if I want EV, I go for China ones powered by deep seek. Like Xpeng P7.

Tesla has the best full self driving by far. The others don't even come close. No other brand has the same amount of training data as Tesla.

Want self driving then take Waymo taxi, why buy a car but not drive it.

Take a Tesla taxi you don't have to buy the car. Tesla is not geofenced like Waymo it can drive you from one city to another 100km away.
