Ng Chee Meng, secretary-general of NTUC and Member of Parliament (MP) for Jalan Kayu, has issued a lawyer's letter to a Facebook user over allegations about him.

In a May 12 statement, Ng referred to posts put up by one Sng Chia Huat and called them "false, misleading, and defamatory".

Sng, who goes by Rich Sng on Facebook, had published a number of posts on Facebook with regards to a picture of Ng and Fujian gang member Su Haijin.

The photos were reportedly taken at a dinner around 2020.

Su was arrested amid a billion-dollar money laundering probe in August 2023.

Previously, Ng responded to allegations about the photo and explained that he is often approached for photographs at engagements which he attends as secretary-general of NTUC.

After learning about the police investigations and subsequent criminal charges against Su, Ng had no further interactions with him, he said.

Asked to apologise

Ng said in his statement that he has asked Sng to withdraw his false allegations and to apologise by May 16.

He has also asked Sng to propose an amount of damages, which Ng will donate to charity.

"If he does not do so, I will be compelled to take legal action against Mr Sng to clear my name against these false, misleading, and defamatory allegations," he said.

A few hours earlier, ministers Ong Ye Kung and Chee Hong Tat said that they had sent lawyers' letters to Sng regarding the same Facebook user.

Calling the allegations "baseless and false", the ministers said in a statement issued via their press secretaries that they have also asked Sng to apologise, withdraw the allegations, and pay damages by May 16.

If not, they will take legal action to clear their names and uphold the government's reputation, they said.

The public understands that no judge will dare to rule against a PAP politician after the demotion of Senior District Judge Michael Khoo many years ago for daring to acquit J B Jeyaretnam. LKY ensured that a clear and unmistakeable signal was sent to the Judiciary that day. To this day, no judge dares to risk his livelihood by ensuring that justice is done.

Chief justice gave Aljunied and Punggol town council a win, nothing happened to him

This happens in a non jury one judge trial…especially if the judge wants to progress his judicial career.

Questions:

1.If the dinner was part of official engagement with private sector stakeholders, why did Sam Goi and others describe it as a private, informal gathering among friends?

2. How does Ng Chee Meng reconcile the discrepancy between the stated purpose of the dinner and the lack of transparency about who was invited and why?

3. Given the controversy over the timeline, can Ng Chee Meng clarify the exact date of the dinner and whether it complied with COVID-19 restrictions at that time?

4. What steps did Ng Chee Meng take to ensure that attendees at such private dinners did not present reputational or legal risks, especially given Su Haijin’s later criminal conviction?

5. Why was there no clear declaration or record of the dinner, as required by civil service protocols for gifts or benefits above a certain value?

6. How does Ng Chee Meng address public concerns about perceived elitism and special access for certain business figures, especially when such access is not available to ordinary citizens?

7. If ministers and public figures are expected to uphold higher standards, why was there a lack of proactive communication or accountability when the controversy surfaced?

8. Does Ng Chee Meng believe that simply not knowing Su Haijin personally is sufficient to address concerns about judgment and association, given the repeated presence of Su at elite gatherings?

If my memory serves me correct, an out-of-court settlement was reached where both parties agreed to resolve their dispute without the court's intervention. This was done through mediation where the parties agreed on terms that put an end to court proceedings. So there was no need for a judge to consider the case i.e. the judge did not have to decide between a fair outcome and losing his job.

Once you give them the mandate, they start suing you back. I thought voters have long expected such old habbit of ministers coming, sooner than expected?

Up to 65% of S'poreans never learn from history.
Most are new minted sinkies who have not quite suffered from the PAP regime yet. The new young sinkie voters were freshly graduated from PAP kindergarten. You add them up, should be about 30% while the die-hard PAP boomers 35%.

He is dumb to sue an ordinary citizen. Once in court, he has to answer these questions. Sng should not apologize or delete his posts.

Lots of questions n doubts also, can I wine n dine also , any contacts ,I want to know them also ,me lots of question on my wet wall of pigeon holes need to settle

Interesting that NCM and OYK/CHT issued separate legal letters. looks like they are distancing themselves from each other.

He should consider defending himself, with the help of a good legal counsel, and see what and how the plaintiff will respond to his legal counsel's cross examination, and listen to the plaintiffs revelation of more details.
If the Court decide in favour of the plaintiff, he may consider the bankruptcy route.
