My Political Views and Relationship with Mr. Harpreet Singh Nehal
By Tan Suee Chieh | 30 April 2025
As Singapore approaches General Election 2025, I would like to offer a fuller political context for my recent postings, and share my professional experience working with Mr. Harpreet Singh Nehal, who is now standing as a candidate.
My Political Views
Since becoming a citizen in 2014, I have consistently voted for the People's Action Party (PAP) and proudly defended the leadership that has built Singapore into an exceptional nation.
Some friends have asked whether my recent writings suggest a shift in political allegiance. The answer is no. I remain supportive of the PAP's leadership and its ability to deliver for Singapore, particularly under Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
I am encouraged by PM Wong's emphasis on "broader measures of success" and "ensuring no one is left behind." His emotional resonance with ordinary Singaporeans is something new and promising.
However, like many, I recognise that Singapore's political culture must change.
We need a more open, engaged, and engaging leadership - one less top-down, more willing to acknowledge mistakes, accept change, kinder, and embrace critical but loyal voices. In a troubled world, resilience does not come from neither rigidity or hierarchy, but from courage, imagination, wisdom, and a healthy pluralism.
Equally important is the need for a more imaginative, citizen-centric civil service - one less focused on process, better at breaking down silos between ministries, fostering collaboration across agencies, and responding to the real challenges Singaporeans face.
Mr Lee Kuan Yew's founding generation gave us a Singapore unparalleled in history. Whether we can renew that spirit and strengthen it for new challenges will define this next era.
I hope PM Wong succeeds in leading a transformational national reset.
It may involve a more complex political landscape and a PAP with fewer seats. If handled well, this will not weaken Singapore - it will strengthen it.
My Professional Relationship with Mr.Harpreet Singh Nehal
I turn now to Mr.Harpreet Singh Nehal.
Harpreet was my lawyer in 2022, when I raised private objections regarding the corporatisation of NTUC Income. I wanted to ensure that my representations were legally sound and appropriately framed.
I subsequently submitted my concerns to MAS in February 2022. MAS viewed the matter as outside its jurisdiction and referred it to MCCY, which in turn suggested I raise it at the EGM, where NTUC Enterprise held 98% of the votes.
Our first communication was on 7 February 2022. At that time, I had no knowledge of his political interests - nor did he ever raise them during our meetings, including when I re-engaged him in July 2024 at the start of the Allianz-Income affair. Even if I had known, it would not have changed my decision.
The Allianz-Income issue was about integrity and public trust, not politics.
From my professional dealings with Mr.Harpreet Singh Nehal, I can say:
1. His professional standards are high, and his strategic thinking is excellent.
2. He has maintained strict confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
3. He had no prior knowledge of my recent public postings about Jalan Kayu or Punggol - nor this current one.
He has never sought my endorsement for his political activities in any way.
I believe that someone of Harpreet's calibre, professionalism, and ethical standards serving in Parliament would strengthen - not weaken - Singapore's governance, resilience, and adaptability.
Closing Reflections
Singapore's political and civil culture must change.
Supporting PM Lawrence Wong's leadership does not mean rejecting capable alternative voices like Harpreet's. On the contrary, such voices may be critical for Singapore's long-term strength and prosperity.
I wish PM Wong well as he leads Singapore into a new phase of development.
The road ahead will be more complex, but with openness and courage, Singapore can renew its spirit and meet the future with confidence.
Majulah Singapura. Majulah NTUC.
