I know of fresh grads from NUS who joined ST owing to their pure love of writing, but their aspirations were quickly extinguished after their drafts were mutilated (censored) by editors afraid to lose their livelihood. When it is the editor's way or the highway, most journalists would tow the line. Who wants to be a martyr with a family to feed? There are no "72 virgins" waiting for a retrenched reporter from the ST who stood up for his principles.
