4. Tottenham Hotspur (28/49)
5. Manchester City (27/49)
6. Liverpool (28/48)
7. Aston Villa (26/45)

Manchester City has one game in hand over Liverpool, Aston Villa has two. Looks hard for Liverpool to finish fourth.

Of the 4 contending for 4th place, Liverpool has the worst chance. Literally, 4th in the fight for 4th.

The loss to Arsenal & draw with ManCity mean a fatal loss of 5 points - which would otherwise translate to Liverpool being king (53 points) over the other 3 rivals at this point.

But it was not meant to be.

Now, Benitez true ability as Manager must come to the fore - both as in tactics as well as man-motivation.

Luckily all seem to be coming back from Glen Johnson to Torres/Gerrarrd & Yossi. Lucas also improving.

Pool's remaining schedule not too bad - the only saving grace.
But I feel given Aston Villa's momentum & easy last lap too - Villian will prove to be the BIGGEST STUMBLING BLOCK to Pool's 4th bid.

Pity.

I would love to see Martin ONeil have his day.

But NEVER NEVER NEVER at the expense of beloved beguiled & besotted Liverpool !

Benitez is behaving like a child during his media interviews.
He is actually not a bad man manager and coach, but his interviews are terrible.

Liverpool board is crap. After the glory years of Shankly, Paisley, Evans and Fagan failed to deliever. During that interim, Dalglish and Souness seemed successful but nothing great, just beneficiaries spillover effects of inheritating a great team. Then came Houllier, who managed to win everything except the two trophies that mattered the most, EPL and ECL. Then came Benitez, who managed to win ECL out of sheer luck of timely flashes of brilliance from Gerrard but nothing else. Contrast this with Manchester United board's selection of manager. One good one will do very well for a long long time. They rode out downtimes with Docherty, Sexton and Atkinson. They saw the light at the end of tunnel and collected the pot of gold at at end of the rainbow with Ferguson. Liverpool should think about it.

knn, Ramseth, what good is it saying your mother is female?

Reciting the facts doesn't reveal anything earth-shattering.

Comparing Pool's managerial history & hated Red Devil's history is inane.

Sir Alex is one lucky catch for Man U & a freak of nature - in all Europe no manager last as long as successful. Watch Man U post-Ferguson - it's anybody's guess.

The only thing I agree with you is Benitez's winning of the '05 Champions League a bit of a fluke. No doubt he got into another Final but the manner of the '05 win is one of a kind.

I have one theory. Since Rafa started to wear a moustache, Pool has never won new silverware. Agree ?

In that '05 1st season, he was clean-shaven & better looking. Arse luck starts once he grow hair above his lips !

No need to be a earth shattering fact, it's quite obvious, ain't it. Benitez is clueless.

Uncannily true. Benitez wears his moustache and stubble looking like the stereotypical gambler who spent Saturday and Sunday overnights in a casino and emerged on Monday morning having lost everything.

Wigan 1 Liverpool 0

Liverpool in deep shit again after a short spell of recovery. Not only 4th placing is slipping away, even 5th placing looks uncertain.

You are damn right. 4th ? Gone 5th ?hopefully 6th likely 7th worst case scenario.

After this season, world cup starts. Heroes are born - or existing ones increase in value.

After World Cup, poaching of top stars start.
Torres, Yossi, even Stevie G....

more pressure for Pool in pre-season

Add to ownership issues....

Lousy time for die-hard Liverpool fans....

Unless the last 9 matches, Pool's rivals screw up big time, but for how long more can Liverpool live on the misfortunes of others.....

Big clubs that qualify for next season ECL will come fishing in the Pool.

Benitez will be a good bet to start as Manager/coach @ Real Madrid next season.

I think you may be prophetic in view of Real Madrid's early exit from CL this morning , only they can provide enough $ & fame for Benitez to beat a face-saving exit ......

Real Madrid exited at 2nd Round, and they want a manager who exited at 1st Round Group Stage?

What's yr problem - why don't you say Real Madrid remember he is a CL-winning manager & 2-time CL-final manager, & if they get Rafa, they can get Torres too .....

Managers (and players) are sought after on current forms, not past forms.

not necessary, Leonardo of AC Milan, current Real Madrid & current Barcelona manager, what current form do they have on point of appointment ?

Not forgetting Benitez was frequently on their to-sign list & previously their club youth team manager...... all add up to be quite plausible, isn't it ? Besides for Rafa, Real is a better exit destination then Juventus. QED

Perez did an interview last year and he was asked about his plans for the hot seat at Bernabeu. He mentioned he would prefer a Spaniard to manage REAL and that the team should be built around Raul and Casillas. Benitez was link with the REAL job even before he took on the job at Anfield.

CL was their top priority and its gone up in smoke.
