MRT lines and stations these days are more about raising the value of the surrounding land, and providing retail spaces from where SMRT can collect more rent, for example, the basement shops between Exit A and B of Holland Village MRT station.

The construction projects themselves also generate revenue for various companies. If you haven't noticed already, there are a lot of long and maze-like tunnels leading to various exits in the newer MRT stations. Lighting, aircon, ventilators, escalators, lifts etc. You get the idea.

Providing public transport is an afterthought.

Need to take EWL before sunrise, at that time it's usually the NS slaves and low SES ( some wearing uniforms) workers taking the first or second train. Not a lot of people. Feels like peak hours in the 1980s-1990s.
