On 6 March 2010, Mr Gopalan Nair asserted that sources had informed him that Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew had suffered a massive heart attack and had been warded in intensive care at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). Less than a day later, after exciting interest across the whole blogosphere, Mr Nair admitted that it was a hoax.
Whatever political point Mr Nair was trying to make by his despicable joke is likely to be overshadowed by the backlash against Mr Nair from ordinary Singaporeans.
Mr Nair’s initial post was picked up by almost a dozen blogs, making the headlines on several popular Singaporean websites.
In response to Mr Nair’s post, TOC sent out requests for two of our writers to be on standby to attend Monday’s parliamentary sitting and look out for motorcades or unusually tight security at SGH. We also asked all our writers to closely monitor online forums like Channelnewsasia, Sammyboy, the comment sections of Temasek Review, and several public Facebook groups for leads.
TOC also emailed the Prime Minister’s office, wrote to Mr Nair requesting a phone interview, and contacted several sources who have connections to SGH.
All this turned out to be a waste of energy, and many involved in chasing Mr Nair’s wild goose felt outraged.
Wasted interest and effort aside, it is completely tasteless to deliberately lie about someone’s death regardless of how much you despise him.
TOC has been a consistent proponent of community moderation, arguing that the abuse of free speech in the form of spreading deliberate misinformation has the potential to cement the public’s perception of the internet as untrustworthy. Further, it provides the Government with the best excuse to regulate the internet to prevent such misinformation from spreading.
TOC has never held back from attacking the government’s positions or questioning public authority, but we have always made these criticisms on the basis of our belief in contributing to a political culture of transparency and accountability. Deliberate misinformation from any side of the political aisle is inimical to that culture.
Mr Nair, who styles himself a “Singapore dissident”, should know that no dissident from even the most repressive dictatorships would deliberately put out blatant lies that can be easily debunked. All this would do is undermine the credibility of the dissident in question.
That should be Mr Nair’s fate.
Mr Nair, when revealing his hoax, asked:
“Is it not stupid that a mere blog like mine, which is not a major newspaper and not a news source of any major importance can be taken so seriously and cause such worry and uncertainly?”
The online community could do Mr Nair a favor by taking him at his word now and completely ignoring anything else he has to say. We would be stupid indeed to do otherwise.

This man is despicable. The incident shows a lot about his character, or rather, the lack of. If I disagreed with a policy or have points to show, I will never stoop so low. Shame on you Gopalan Nair.

He has been known as despicable and low class, tasteless and what have you. His blog is nothing more than a space for him to vent his anger and hatred for the authority here in Singapore.

For people who has been fervently following his blog, think about the things that he wrote in the past, how much can be trusted? And to his loyal fans, this animal is really not worth your time. I wasted mine here writing about him, but it is a necessary waste.

Singaporeans can’t take a joke is it? Time is not on his side. See how kancheong the people.

Gopalan claimed that he created the hoax so as to highlight the situation in Singapore whereby the focus is all on Lee Kuan Yew. Try as I might — and perhaps I’m not smart enough — I don’t see how the hoax served this purpose.

At best, it only shows that society reacts strongly to the death of a prominent figure. Just like how the whole world buzzed when Michael Jackson died; or in a local context, how the blogosphere were filled with laments and condolences when JBJ passed away. Regardless of what your opinion about Lee Kuan Yew is, his death will be news because of what he has done.

Perhaps Gopalan’s purpose is to highlight to frailty of truth in the online world, in which case, as Zheng Xi has pointed out, we can blacklist yet another blog.

I don’t think it is whether Singaporean’s can take a joke or not.

I had a friend who lost his fiancee in the Silkair Palambang crash. Walking the experience with him, and then reading of jokes about the crash – honestly, it woke me up from what some things can be joked about and what cannot be.

Given how I despise Nair, I will still not crack a joke about him dying, or him losing a loved one. That is just below the belt.

I’m utterly dissapointed with this fellow as he has no principle to talk about. Instead of putting on his stand, he chose to apoligise to get off the hook only to spew hatred in his safe haven when he was off the hook.
For a “politician” who goes after a person rather than the matters, he’s only out to seek “revenge” for his hatred and his agenda. Such is a person that deserve no trust in his words

It’s not a joke, the repercussions could be immense. For all the good work that other alternatives are trying to achieve, one “joke” like this gives the current powers ammunition to control information. And knowing our current MICA minister, he’ll just use it against everybody else.
Besides, you never joke about somebody dying, not even LKY. You or me might not like everything he’s done, but he’s not Hitler or Pol Pot.

TOC, your damage control is getting better and better. At least you guys got the brains to differentiate dissident from subversion, from stupidity.

Yeah, and still moderating me from time to time. But no worries.

He has definitely crossed the line this time. One phrase. No sportsmanship. With people like G.Nair in the opposition camp. They definitely dont need any enemies.

He is so despicable! He should learn from me. Even though I dislike Lazurus and the Jumping Lizards, I won’t go so far as to wish them ill-health and death.

What impresses me is the amount of work and logistic co-ordination TOC has put into this affair in order to ferret out the real trutt behind these despicable lies. Keep up ther good work!

G. Nair, the ball is now in your court.
You are a great disappointment to your fans.
Henceforth, I do not trust anything you write!

Chao CB Kia....he will say anything to generate some traffic to his so-called blog. Lame ass! :oIo:

it's beri nasty for what he did, but still he got a point about sgp will be crippled when lau lee come to past...anyway he already said it's a hoax let's forgive him....

lau lee should fake death once in a while to prove if his deputies are really loyal to his regime...

if any MIWs move their funds immediately after his death....we know for sure, who are the real traitors...LOL!!

Wonder what he will say next - dog rape his mother? UFO captured LHL? His cock shrunk to peesai overnight?

This man has lost all credibility! Even Shitty Times seem trustworthy in comparison!

For his age at 87, it is expected of him to die anytime, whether from heart attack or fall from the plane. All news about LKY death, hoax or real, will not change the way people expected from him anytime.

What I do believe is that with the old fart still holding executive power, it smells trouble for Singapore. Moreover his son is 4th in the order of old fart succeeding after him, and now made a PM, is shaky for Singapore future.

I think it is a good hoax, a scenario played out, like a rehersal, for his death that bound to happen anytime, not today, but tomorrow is resonable expectation.

As he can plans how he expected his grand wake and funeral will be like, so can we put put up a secanrio of expected outcome after he died in terms of poltical stablitiy, financial and economical stability.

There is nothing wrong in trying out a trial, mock up or rehersal of the expceted dimise of the man still want to hold on to his power. When power is not transfer properly, you will expect immediate response to his death.

You sure missed the point by a mile. Its not about the old man, its about Gopalan.

It reminded me of Martyn See's interview with Robert Ho. I always wondered why people are so blur and fail to reason why Robert and Gopalan are untouchables for all the mainstream opposition parties.

People should have woken up when Gopalan asked to borrow a laser sailing craft while awaiting for his trial.

Scroobal,

That was NOT Gopalan nair's only SIN during the period awaiting his trial!

He mislead a LOT of people and he ABUSED people's trust in him during that time!

I won't mention further details as it would unfairly implicate those who helped him OUT OF THE KINDNESS OF THEIR HEARTS.

Suffice it to say GN is an entirely untrustworthy and dishonest charlatan whose words cannot ever be taken at face value -- EVER.

He deserves his jail sentence every bit. Complete disregard for good conduct and honesty and common sense. A drunkard and an imbecile.

how often do you hear people hoaxing their PMs or Presidents death? LOL!

but he is now American, so why do we still bother? LOL!

But LKY death sure makes Global Headlines....especially CNN news alert on your iPhone!

I am aware bro and no different to the way he used to service his clients. He eventually ended up at Golden Mile. That tells alot.

I wonder what kind of people made up Gopalan's clientele, now that he has become well-known for telling a lie over the Internet to millions of people.

I dun get this, why paste other forum posts in SBF forum?:confused::confused:

Why Ah Sam never stop these? its irritating :oIo::oIo::oIo:

The question is what "clientele"? When he went to US, he initially had Singaporeans wanting to migrate as clients. At least one is a regular here and leave it him to throw some light of his experience with Gopalan.
