SINGAPORE: Leader of the Opposition and Workers' Party chief Pritam Singh arrived at the State Courts on Monday (Oct 14) morning for the first day of his trial over allegedly lying to parliament.

Seven months ago, he was charged with two counts of lying to a parliamentary committee over the Raeesah Khan case.
Singh, 48, appears to be the first Member of Parliament to face these particular charges under the Parliament (Privileges, Immunities and Powers) Act, experts told CNA.

Prosecution asks Khan about key events

Deputy Public Prosecutor Sivakumar Ramasamy is asking Ms Khan about the speech she made in parliament on Aug 3, 2021, about "empowering women", which touched on polygamy and genital cutting.

Mr Sivakumar then reads out the false anecdote that Ms Khan recounted in parliament.

Ms Khan said she prepared the speech weeks before the parliament sitting. "I just wrote my thoughts down and formulated my research around that," she said, when asked by the prosecution how she prepared.

She said she added the false anecdote a few days before the sitting, and that the speech was shared with Singh and WP's vice-chair Faisal Manap.
