I've seen drivers park their cars this way on purpose, to prevent another car from parking in the next space - more space to open doors fully, less risk of people dinging your car when they open their doors.

It was a problem for other car makers. Consumers prefer a smaller cheaper version of branded cars rather than other mass manufactured alternatives. That was how Germany became a huge car exporter.
