THE Straits Times swept 10 of the 14 journalism awards at an annual ceremony to honour the best in journalism at Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) English and Malay Newspapers Division on Tuesday.
Scoop artist Leslie Lopez, senior regional correspondent for the paper, led the near clean sweep. He was named the Journalist of the Year and also won the Story of the Year Award - for the third consecutive year - for his scoop on the capture of terror leader Mas Selamat.
Ms Jessica Cheam from The Straits Times' Money Desk was named Young Journalist of the Year.
The English daily also won the Feature of the Year, Commentary/Analysis of the Year, Headline of the Year, Infographics of the Year, Layout/Page Design of the Year, News Picture of the Year, Feature Picture of the Year awards, as well a Special Award of the Year for Excellence.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, EMND's Editor-in-Chief Patrick Daniel highlighted some of the challenges facing the group in the years ahead.
'We will have to focus far more on efficiency than we've done in the past. We must be at the forefront of the 'work smarter' movement', he said. Another challenge is 'to stay on top of the game in everything we do - from art and photo and page layout to news reporting and commentary and analysis', he added.
