The Nanyang Siang Pau Story (1971 - 1973) - Know your History

Re: The Nanyang Siang Pau Story -

The ISA and its predecessor was meant for this reason - terrorism. Not to label and detain your political rivals.

After Goh Chok Tong took over as PM in 1990. the use of ISA faded off to near redundacy in practical terms by 2000, during which the political weapon of choice became the defamation suit. Then came 9/11 and JI, and ISA sprang back into prominent action again, crescendoing in rhe Mas Selamat Kastari escape from detention centre in 2008.

Goh's first attempt at lawsuit ended with the hilarious paltry damage of $20K, not enough to pay his lawyers. The High Court judge Rajendran was retiring and had no fear.

I don't recall many defamation lawsuits launched by Goh on his own.

If today, 2010, the PAP Garment would still invoke ISD for 'Marxist Conspiracy', the citizenry will dismiss it with utter disbelief & scorn.

I would not be unhappy if some are 'warned' or even 'detained' under the Religious Harmony Act for indiscriminate proselytism.

This should have happened last year at the height of the Feminist Mentor revelation or if AWARE EGM had been held at Singapore Expo together with their co-religionists' propaganda convention.

Raja became quite maniacal about the press. He is used to give them a thrashing in his office. He also used the invite the arty farty fraternity for a thrashing when they raised freedom of expression. He showed seige mentality after fighting the communists for so long.

Almost ironic that Rajaratnam was behind the attacks against the media. 'Almost' because the bunch of them were diabolical opportunists ready and willing to do anything to stem free speech and independence for the populace.

And that is why I never trust any of the old guard when it comes to SG with the exception of Dr Goh Keng Swee. Everyone else were power hungry hypocrites.

Even in Rajaratnam's eulogy they had the audacity to speak highly of him in terms of his journalistic integrity and being a freedom fighter for SG.

You indeed have an elephant's memory. Marshall was so upset that he went away and a piece of his life went with him.

There was once I was browsing Subhas Ananda's autobiography 'The Best I could' - this is another colorful Singaporean.

Currently the gutsy founder & President of Spore Criminal lawyers Association & Spore's foremost criminal lawyer who in his younger days was once framed by a renegade police inspector & detained without trail in Queenstown Remand Prison.

In his autobiography, he recounted his many dealings with David Marshall, in fact during the Nanyang Siang Pau case, young Subhas was junior lawyer assisting Marshall.

I think their relationship was largely cordial until towards the very end.

That was when Marshall had retired from his diplomatic career & had regular gatherings with his lawyer kakis. By then, he has developed a certain snootiness & would often mock his fellow lawyer friends of their supposedly meek ways when dealing with PAP.

One time, Subhas can't take it anymore & gave it to him back : if you are so garang, why you bow to PAP & report to Raja ? words to that effect.

Marshall visibly took offence & shortly after, his yearly birthday gathering, he pointedly left out his usual invitation to Subhas Ananda.

Interesting autobiography.

Another episode Subhas recounted : he was again assistant lawyer to the QC who defended JBJ in 1986 re: mis-stating of WP party accounts. At first District Judge Michael Khoo found him innocent but prosecution appealed. On appeal, was found guilty.

Along the way, Subhas had advised JBJ to accept a small fine which would allow him to still remain as MP. But JBJ decided to fight all the way ending up answering to a final fine of 5k & 3 mth jail - enough to disqualify him from being MP & standing for elections for 5 yrs.

Subhas has created a new public persona after the death of his brother who was a steward on the ill fated SIA flight from Taipei and had to look after his brother's family.

Prior to that, he was heavily involved in gang activites and headman of the black eagles in sembawang.. He was no angel and those who have seen him in court will recall the Indian chicks that will wait outside for his cases. People who know him used to pity his client who in those days were ignoramus gangsters.

He was lucky when Internal investigation revealed that the silly Inspector was screwing his girlfriend and no Minister or High court judge will sign to carry on the detention after the obvious conflict of interest.

Subhas decided that he needed singapore citizenship and started to behave. He has been pro establishment ever since. The best criminal lawyer at the moment is Sant Singh. Prior to that it was late Palakrishnan and Marshall.

Once again, I bow to our resident Tree of Knowledge ! kudos Scroo !

(psssst.... why no more istana tales, Old man & Prata man no longer on speaking terms ? or Ah Lao now must always at be home stroking, i mean looking after wifey )

Except for his personal objection to Death Penalty.

BTW, In his book, Subhas also commented on Francis Seow:-
- brilliant man, but character ... uh-uh
- held hopes for his Law Society Leadership, disappointed he cha-bo !
- Francis owe many $, claims still owe Subhas $25K
- thinks Seow should have returned, face his tax charges, feels 'at most pay fine only'

Correction: maybe not the best, but most visible Criminal Lawyer. All the sensational case, sure got him - from Ah Took, to Constance , to 1-eye-dragon, to MingYi etc etc

Dunno how he tahan, his heart bypassed, health not tip top....

No lawyer will publicly claim that he believes in the death sentence, caning, corrective detention even if they strongly believe in it because because they will look silly when arguing the case in court - no conviction. One important avenue against the death sentence is the position that it may not be constitutional. Its his bread and butter.

Francis always had problems with money. When he left public service, he got into trouble over accounts at Braddell Brothers and faced disciplinary charges. In fact his girlfriend Mei Siah kept bailing him out. But a damn good lawyer. Excellent court craft and well prepared.

Many of Subhas cases are paid by the state as the defendents are poor. Gone are the days when rich people get involved in murders. Note the well informed and the rich never engage Subhas. Note the recent minor case of drinking driving, the lawyer was Sant Singh an SC. There are also better criminal defence counsels like Leo Fernando and his son Peter Fernando.

I feel sorry for the defendents when Subhas becomes a lawyer. It will be matter of time, before details will start appearing in the press. Note his acquittal record.

The problem with these bastards despite their age is the fear of the wives. Talk big in public but its the ladies that wear the pants at home. I suspect one of the wives caught them smoking beedi behind the guardroom. Give them sometime as they tend to appear just before the GE to consult, complain and brainstorm.

There also rumours that they have gathering over at Othman Wok's place in East Coast as Abang has been placed under home detention by his latest wife. Apparently his new wig has highlight and the wife suspected something. Will check it out.

Subhas is a useless FART. But he succeeded in defending the shoe thrower, though his logic was way out.

Re: The Nanyang Siang Pau Story -

As ridiculous as a Reagan administration official Hendrickson supporting a Marxist plot!!!

Ly Singko passed on in Canada but I don't know about the rest. Incidentally, Ly's son is the well known vet, Jean-Paul Ly. If Singko were a Chinese chauvinist, he was an utter failure with his own children.

where are all these people now?

Bro, passed away in Oz. After his release , he went to France to teach at Sorbonne. His family however were in OZ while he was working here. His Christian name is Basil and his son's Jean-Paul and his kids went to English Schools and yet he was detained for being a Chinese Chauvinist.

The one who went to Canada is his boss whose family owned Nanyang Siang Pau.

Thank you. I remember now. Another serious abuse of the ISA.
