As I understand it, and based on historical records, there was a peace treaty in yathrib as indicated in the medina Constitution. And for several hundred years under Arab rule, nobody was forced to convert as there was no religion to convert into. It's either you believe in God or you do not. Very simple. The religion was formed maybe around the year 800 AD. First with the compilation of verses into the Quran and later the Hadith based on what the prophet was supposed to have done.
