Ass Loong Son just mentioned ISD few days ago. Now it is Abdullah Badawi's turn. :p:D Aren't they both similarly feeling insecure?

Abudullah's ISD (Special Brunch) had at least not let JI fled. But Ass Loong's best was only asking Mr. Low Thia Kiang weather his brother in law Wong Kan Seng should resign over that matter or not.:rolleyes:;)

Pak Lah: ISA not ruled out Sep 10, 08 8:34pm Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today did not rule out the possibility of invoking the Internal Security Act - which allows detention without trial - against those who stoke racial tension.

Responding to a question at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, he said: "If the (home) ministry finds it necessary, then the appropriate action can be taken."

However, Abdullah did not elaborate on the issue.

The premier's remark comes amid rumours that the Barisan Nasional-led government - which is under siege and riddled with internal problems - may launch a crackdown similar to what was initiated by Abdullah's predecessor Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1987.

The Mahathir government had then detained more than 100 people, ranging from politicians to activists, under the tough security law in a dragnet known as Operasi Lallang.

BN, which suffered its worst-ever electoral setback in the March 8 polls, is constantly being threatened by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim who has vowed to oust the ruling coalition through defections.

The PKR supremo, who returned to Parliament after a 10-year absence, has set Sept 16 for the political coup.

However, he also said that the date may be deferred because of the unexpected twist which saw two-thirds of BN backbenchers taking a study tour to Taiwan.

In addition, the Abdullah-Najib Razak leadership is facing pressure from Mahathir as well as internal dissension within Umno.

A further blow came from Umno vice-president Muhyiddin Yassin today. The senior politician urged Abdullah to step down before the 2010 transition of power plan.

'Cause for concern'

Yesterday, the military weighed in with Armed Forces chief General Abdul Aziz Zainal calling on the government to take stern action against those who incite racial sentiments in order to prevent chaos and disorder.

The army chief drew flak from the opposition for this rare comment with PAS Youth telling him to stay out of politics.

Also expressing worry was DAP MP Charles Santiago. "The Armed Forces chief's statement should be a cause for concern for all Malaysians." "The role of the army should be confined to the barracks. It works at the behest of the government of the day. It should be neutral.”

On Saturday, Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar too raised the ISA spectre when he said that the preventive detention law could be used against controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin for insulting Islam and Prophet Muhammad.

Stay out of politics, PAS Youth tells army chief Sep 10, 08 5:41pm PAS Youth today issued a firm order to the Armed Forces chief general Abdul Aziz Zainal - stay out of politics!

The party told Abdul Aziz not to be involved in the current imbroglio between the Barisan Nasional parties over racial issues triggered by the Penang Umno leader Ahmad Ismail's outburst.

While the armed forces was right in monitoring the situation, "Pas Youth is against the armed forces extending its own hand into the matter", said its chief Salahuddin Ayub.
This was because the armed forces' intervention in the war of words between BN leaders could lead to it being used by Umno for the sake of its political survival, he said.

"Rumours that the armed forces will intervene should there be a change of power from BN to Pakatan Rakyat are widespread. Umno is purposefully stoking racial tensions as it did in 1987 as an excuse to arrest opposition leaders.

"In tense situations such as this, the armed forces should stay out - not voice out as if to confirm rumours that it will take over in the event (the) Barisan (government) collapses," said Salahuddin in a statement.

"PAS Youth hopes that democracy can be upheld, because we do not want what happened in Thailand to happen here," he added, referring to the Thai military's deposition of its former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and its year-long hold on power in the country.

The Ahmad Ismail-‘racial slur' controversy erupted when it was reported that Penang Umno's Bukit Bendera division leader Ahmad questioned the Chinese community's calls for equality given its ‘immigrant' status.

Ahmad was also said to have questioned the Chinese' willingness to share and distribute their wealth equally with the other races.

This drew flak from various quarters, especially from BN component parties, who then pressured the Umno leadership to act against Ahmad.

The military's stand

Yesterday, the armed forces' Abdul Aziz added his voice to the debacle and, departing from the norm, reminded the government of the dangers of allowing racial issues to exacerbate.
Categorising it as a security threat, he called on the authorities to take stern action against those who stoke racial sentiments.
He warned that racial issues should not be raised as it had the potential to create chaos and disorder.

"Racial issues are the most feared by security forces as they could lead to chaos. They are a security threat," he was quoted as saying.

Commenting on this, Salahuddin said the purported racial tensions was confined only to BN and does not involve the leaders or supports of Pakatan.

"When Umno becomes desperate, it digs up racial issues to the point of calling for BN component parties to leave the coalition.
"Other parties, on the other hand, take advantage by blaming Umno for its racism. This is what has led to the racial crisis in this country," he said.

Expect 'surprise' on Sept 16, says Anwar

Beh Lih Yi & Andrew Ong | Sep 10, 08 5:04pm Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim insisted that his self-imposed Sept 16 deadline to form the new federal government is “very much” on track, although a large number of the BN MPs are abroad.

Met at the Jalan Duta court complex after a hearing related to the sodomy charge against him, he was asked to comment on his remarks that he would be deferring his plan, now that BN has sent 49 of its MPs to Taiwan on an agricultural study trip.

Saying that the plan is on track, he however said he would deal with the details later. He also said there will be a “surprise” on Tuesday, but did not elaborate.

“I will fly to Taipei if needs be if they want to meet me. I am not joining them, but will talk to them,” quipped the newly-elected Permatang Pauh MP, in response to a question.

Anwar, 61, had earlier said he had information that the MPs would not be allowed to return from Taiwan before Sept 16 in order to thwart his plans.

His Pakatan Rakyat alliance has 81 of the 222 seats in parliament. He had promised voters he would overturn BN’s majority by inviting its MPs to defect to the Pakatan camp.

‘Incitement of Umno leaders’

On the reported move by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad to return to Umno, Anwar quipped: “Is he trying to help the ship sink faster?”

He also said Armed Forces chief Jen Abdul Aziz Zainal’s call for stern action by the government against those who stoke racial sentiments was a “timely” reminder.

“I think it is timely that the army reminds the government that they should act swiftly against perpetrators of racial hatred,” Anwar said.

“However, I must caution that this issue is due to incitement by Umno leaders to cover up corruption, abuse of power and economic mismanagement pending imminent change in this country.”

Anwar stressed, however, that he was not in favour of the use of draconian legislation such as the Internal Security Act and Sedition Act to handle such situations.

The army chief had warned yesterday that racial issues should not be raised as this has potential to create chaos and disorder.

that is a very useful weapon and resource to utilise if you want to lock out someone without any reason or proof for quite awhile till they cracked.

Army chief defends 'stern action' call
Sep 11, 08 2:24pm

The Armed Forces chief today defended his rare call for "stern action" against those inciting racial conflict.
MCPX

general abdul aziz zainalGeneral Abdul Aziz Zainal, the military chief who earlier this week warned that racial issues were a "major threat to the country", again called for a lid to be put on any troublemakers.

"I only voice my concern on this issue, stern action must be taken to prevent it from happening," he told a press conference.

"There is no country that wants to see itself in turmoil," he added.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has yesterday raised concern about the state of ethnic relations in the country.

"The racial situation in our country looks like it is showing signs of strain and increasing tensions among races," he said as he announced the measures to punish an ruling party member for sparking a racial row.

"We for so long have been able to control the situation so that nothing untoward happens, but we can't allow a situation like this to continue... which could affect our peace and stability," he said.

Fears of split in ruling coalition

Ahmad Ismail, a senior member of the ruling party, was suspended for three years yesterday for triggering a race row with an outburst against ethnic Chinese, calling them "squatters" and warning them not to seek political power.

Deputy police chief Ismail Omar also sounded a warning yesterday, saying that racially charged statements had triggered a dangerous rash of inflammatory messages on Internet blogs and SMS text messages.

"I am issuing a stern warning to all quarters to refrain from making statements on sensitive issues via the various media," he said, according to the state Bernama news agency.

Ahmad's comments had raised fears of a split in Abdullah's coalition of race-based parties, which includes ethnic Chinese parties that were infuriated by the diatribe.

"The patience of the Malays and Muslims has a limit. Do not push us to the wall, as when we turn back we will be forced to push the Chinese in the interests of our own survival," Ahmad said in a press conference on Monday.

"The Chinese should not try to be like the Jews in America - it is not enough they control the economy, now they want political control," he said.

PM 'surprised' by Muhyiddin's call
Sep 11, 08 2:50pm

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today expressed surprise over senior cabinet colleague Muhyiddin Yassin's call for the premier to hasten his exit plan.

"I am not staying on just for the pleasure of staying on," said Abdullah today. He was visibly upset when reporters posed him the question on Muhyiddin's remarks.

abdullah ahmad badawi pak lah pc 060607 smilesThe prime minister said that he had a lot of responsibilities and problems to solve before he handed over the leadership to his current deputy Najib Abdul Razak in 2010.

He said that the handover plan was agreed to by the cabinet, adding that Muhyiddin was merely stating his own opinion.

Yesterday International Trade and Industry Minister Muhyiddin said Abdullah should transfer power to Najib before the agreed 2010 deadline.

He said 2010 was too far away, and recent political setbacks by the ruling coalition should prompt Abdullah to rethink his timetable.

The Umno vice-president said an earlier leadership transition would give the Barisan Nasional ruling coalition time to prepare for the next general election.

"I'm being very frank and open because I have no qualms about saying what I think is correct: 2010 is too long," Muhyiddin was quoted as saying at the sidelines of a Forbes conference held in Singapore.

Well, I wonder how come Abdullah Badawi doesn't know the irony of the situation at all, why he accuses Anwar of raising racial hatred when its UMNO is the one who has been doing the provocation in last few months..and not the opposition alliance.

Yap if you don't have an ISD/ISA, what do you want? A FBI which failed to detect the 911 bombings?

Yap if you don't have an ISD/ISA, what do you want? A FBI which failed to detect the 911 bombings?

If ISD is allowed to exist, then it must be completely depoliticized to the maximum, its staff numbers reviewed and revamped, positions re-looked, and everything sterlised. Only then can it continue under a new name and with new staff.

The main point is that if its a security agency, a top one at that, then it shouldn't be playing politics for one party. If they do, then the director and his cronies must be sacked on the spot.
