In the middle of Thursday afternoon, a ten-year-old girl was stabbed in the stomach in a park in central Gothenburg where she was with her grandmother and grandfather. A suspected perpetrator has been arrested. According to information, the man chanted “Allahu akbar.”
It was shortly after 12.30 that the police were called to Brunnsparken where a child had been stabbed. According to the police, the girl has been taken to hospital and the situation is described as critical.
“The child is bleeding from the stomach, according to reports from the scene,” says Thomas Fuxborg, press spokesperson at the police in the West region.
Witnesses at the scene are described as traumatized and have begun to be questioned. A large police operation was deployed in the park and a suspected perpetrator, aged 35, has been arrested. The case is classified as attempted murder.
“Youths who were passing by are said to have brought the perpetrator to the ground, guards and security guards also intervened. Then there was also an off-duty police officer who intervened,” says Fuxborg.
“I saw the perpetrator get caught. He first lay on the ground for quite some time. Then they picked him up, put bags on his hands, put him in the police car and drove away,” says Firas Moussa, who works in the house next to the bloody tram stop where the arrest took place, according to Göteborgs-Posten.
The reason for the assault is still unclear and the police see no connection between the perpetrator and the victim. The grandmother was also slightly injured when she tried to protect the girl.
