SINGAPORE — A 27-year-old man was sentenced to jail time on Thursday (Sept 8) for taking multiple video clips of men showering at Toa Payoh Swimming Complex over several months.
Guan Lock Chang wanted to post the voyeuristic videos online to make some money, but did not proceed with his plan in the end because he felt that they were not professional enough.
Guan, a Malaysian, was jailed for 18 weeks — or about four months. He pleaded guilty to one count of voyeurism with another charge taken into consideration for sentencing.
He will begin serving his sentence on Oct 3 and remains out on bail of S$15,000.
The court heard that in late October last year, he came up with the idea of taking and posting such videos online to earn some cash.
He then went to the men’s toilet at Toa Payoh Swimming Complex, entered a cubicle next to a person who was showering, and filmed each one by raising his mobile phone over the cubicle wall.
He ended up taking 20 video clips over six different days between October last year and January this year.
The videos ranged from five to 26 seconds long, involving at least seven unidentified men whose genitals and buttocks were captured in the footage.
Guan was nabbed only on Jan 17 this year when a man caught him red-handed. The victim called the police, saying that the man was trying to delete the evidence in front of him.
The prosecution sought 18 to 20 weeks' jail, noting that Guan was driven by profit and committed the offences on multiple occasions.
For voyeurism, he could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned, or given any combination of the three.
