After decades of boasting Singapore reputation as a high tech, high skilled and engineering powerhouse in the region, it is a shame that we can't even come up with a good list of innovative companies. Ok, Creative is perhaps the closest we have and the best representative. However, from Mr. Sim experience with the authority and his story, it says a lot about the way our government push for more innovative companies - almost fruitless. For so long, we have not push our development envelop far enough and many of our investments are down the drain.

The technical sector in SG has become more or service than design and research. Many so called tech companies are actually middlemen or traders, selling products made by Chinese, western countries, Japanese and Taiwanese. Yes, they do get a cut without the need of setting up factories and development offices. However, this is not healthy as innovative products will drive the growth of the Nation and provide plenty of job opportunities.

Not many know that at one time ST was making large monitors for Apple. Apple did a transfer of technology to ST.

What did ST do with the knowledge

Nothing, thats why many are not aware of this

I din know this. Thanks for sharing. Another example I have heard of is the Hard disk and PC industry. SG used to be a major player in HDD and PC for a long time. We even have our own PC comapnies, IPC, Wearnes and Rangers etc. But due to unkown reasons, these companies failed to make it and exit totally from the sector. Think Acer. It is now the number 2 PC/laptop maker in the world.

Acer is no 2 in the world PC market

Yes I can still remember IPC, they sold cheaper PC & laptops and had an office at Upper Lebar. If I remember Wearnes was owned by an Indian. Only Ranger is still around selling kachang puteh at IT shows :)

Family owned businesses in Spore seem to have problems growing larger. Maybe its because the gov't don't provide much assistance? They only provide lip service.

Gov't is too busy looking after its own self interests in Temasek, various GLCs,... Even then politicians & scholars have shown themselves to be inept businessmen.

As long as the PAP stays in power Sporeans can expect more of the same nonsense.

Anyway Spore has lost the tech/R&D race. It's now casinos, after that who knows what

In ST Engrg we got a dept specialising in armouring fighting vehicles but it does not even have a decent laboratory. Yet the original VP in charge got promoted sky high............ CTO for many achievements in armour etc. How was it done? Just kawan kawan with its overseas supplier and transplant its technologies, RnD etc .....

NO bloody wonder that we lag behind .......... so many bums there incl bums who do not know how to make good decisions. Too many fat cats.

On an island where dynastic politics run amok, cronies and lackeys serving the imperial family and peasants toiling to pay off debts, INNOVATION is absolutely ZERO.

CRT? no market for it

you forgot to mention sherry from pet computer

Seagate's exit may encourage others like ST Micro and Kulicke Soffa to ship out as well. Really bleak.

Creative is as Singaporean as Gong Li these days, and I don't see how it can rise again like Lazarus.

CRT? no market for it

Back then Apple's 21" CRT monitor was state of the art. Service providers had to use a color analyser & signal generator to service those monitors.

The customers who bought them were usually those in the publishing field.

New users might know aboutabout iPods, iPhones & Macbooks but Apple has a history of making quality monitors. Apple doesn't just use off the shelf components like the sony crt, they tweak them using propreitaty know how.

Even today Apple's LCD is the monitor of choice if you can afford them :)
