To mark the International Migrants' Day (IMD) on Dec 18, this was the first in a series of events organised by the Migrant Workers Centre (MWC). There are more events lined up, including a nine-course sit down dinner on Dec 15, held by the four major domitory operators in collaboration with MWC, as well as an outdoor picnic held on Dec 20, organised by the TWC2 organisation (Transient Workers Count Too). The IMD, which was proclaimed by the United Nations in year 2000, is a day which countries disseminate information on the human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants. Most countries will have radio stations broadcasting a programme that celebrates the achievements and highlights the concerns of migrants worldwide. Apart from radio programmes, seminars and conferences regarding migrant rights and experiences will also be held. In Singapore, celebrations started on Sunday with total of 15,000 people enjoying the carnival held at D'Marquee, of which 5,000 were Singaporeans.
