When he was already in custody, an Islamist threatened a fellow prisoner to cut off his head. He had previously overheard the man talking about the Taliban. The district court in Hamburg takes the threat seriously and is taking action.
On Monday, the Hamburg district court sentenced an Islamist to six months in prison without probation for threats in two cases. According to the conviction of the court, the 29-year-old threatened a fellow prisoner with death in the detention center, as a court spokesman said
The accused reportedly overheard a conversation by other prisoners through his cell window on September 6 last year, which dealt with the Taliban’s takeover of power in Afghanistan and the Salafists. When the accused joined the conversation, a fellow prisoner called out to him that no one had insulted his God. The accused then threatened to “cut off the head” and “slaughter” the other man.
The 29-year-old repeated the threat
The prison administration tried to prevent the accused from meeting the threatened fellow prisoner, who worked as a domestic worker. Nevertheless, they met three weeks later on a day off, the spokesman said. The accused again threatened to kill and “slaughter” the fellow prisoner. The judge stated that the threats corresponded to the diction of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS).
At the time of the crime, the accused was on trial for recruiting for a terrorist organization abroad. He was accused of promoting IS on social media and spreading calls by the terrorist organization to fight against those of other faiths. The Hanseatic Higher Regional Court sentenced him to three and a half years in prison on December 3, 2021. An earlier judgment by the District Court of St. Georg was included in this sentence.
“The Taliban will not be able to duck before that”
The district court had already sentenced the accused to one year and four months in prison on March 25, 2021 for dangerous bodily harm. He and two accomplices prayed on October 9, 2020 in the driveway of an apartment building. When a driver tried to drive through, they beat him up.
According to the court spokesman, the accused had a “problematic” childhood. He had already been convicted of assault in 2016 and had been in prison for a while. After that he converted and became radicalized.
The judgment of the Higher Regional Court is final. If the district court’s new verdict is upheld, the 29-year-old would have to serve a total of four years in prison.
