Canadian police announced on Saturday that they had arrested an individual who entered a mosque in the Ontario city of Mississauga (center) early in the morning, where he allegedly sprayed pepper spray.
This is what emerges from a press release made public by the regional police of Peel (Greater Toronto), and which was relayed by the local media.
According to the statement, local police arrested a 24-year-old individual, named Mohammad Moiz Omar, who interrupted the morning prayer (Sobh) which was taking place in the “Dar Al-Tawheed” mosque in Mississauga, a suburb. of the city of Toronto, capital of the province of Ontario.
The individual, who was carrying a small axe, sprayed a pepper spray substance, but no casualties were reported, except for minor injuries caused by the sprayed substance.
The individual, continues the same source, was quickly subdued by the faithful present and then arrested by the police who arrived at the place of worship, immediately alerted.
The police also stress that it is an “isolated act, at this stage of the investigation,” but assesses “the possibility of a hate crime.”
The security services added that the arrested individual has been taken into custody and that the investigation is continuing.
The police made it clear that they will continue to be present in the area and around the place of worship to reassure the community and provide additional support to those affected by the attack.
Reacting to this attack, the imam of the Dar Al-Tawheed mosque in Mississauga, Ibrahim Hindy, spoke in a tweet of a “violent attack.”
“Our community will never be broken and we refuse to be bullied,” he added.
