Swimming across the sea alone at night...

AsiaOne

A recruit from the Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) on Pulau Tekong was picked up by the Police Coast Guard after attempting to swim towards Singapore.

The incident happened last December.

The recruit made his attempt at night, and it is unclear how far he swam before he was spotted.

A Mindef spokesman said the man was found on the Kechil Land Link, between Pulau Tekong and Pulau Tekong Kechil.

Mindef said the 18-year-old recruit had been disciplined, but did not comment on whether he is still in active service.

For leaving the camp without permission, the recruit could have been AWOL (Absent Without Official Leave), an offense punishable with a jail term of up to two years in the detention barracks.

Sources told The Straits Times the recruit was a student from Raffles Institution.

All Singaporean males and Singapore permanent residents are required to serve national service of two years upon reaching the age of 16 and a half years.

Most recruits are sent to the BMTC during the first phase of their training.
