TOPLINE

The Hong Kong government said Monday it is banning all flights from the U.K. starting July 1, becoming the latest in a growing list of territories enacting a fresh round of travel restrictions due to the spread of the more infectious delta variant in Britain.

KEY FACTS

Hong Kong’s government announced the ban in a Monday statement, saying it has classified the U.K. as “extremely high risk.”
Flights from the U.K. will be banned from midnight on Wednesday, according to the statement, while transiting travelers who will have to spend more than two hours in the Chinese territory before boarding will also be banned.
Hong Kong has a low coronavirus vaccination rate (just over 10% of the population is fully vaccinated), but some of the world’s strictest quarantine rules for incoming passengers.
It had recently increased the length of time U.K. travelers had to spend quarantining in hotels to three weeks.

CRUCIAL QUOTE

The Hong Kong government explained the ban was issued because of the “recent rebound of the epidemic situation in the U.K. and the widespread delta variant virus strain there.” The delta variant, which is highly contagious, makes up nearly all new coronavirus cases in the U.K. Meanwhile, Hong Kong last week detected its first suspected local case of the delta variant.

KEY BACKGROUND

Hong Kong is not alone in enacting new restrictions against the U.K. due to the delta variant. Malta, a popular vacation destination for Brits, recently announced non-vaccinated British tourists will be banned from June 30, with the exception of children aged 5-11 (who will be able to visit with proof of a negative test). Meanwhile, Portugal and Spain will also both require proof of vaccination. The unvaccinated face a 15-day quarantine in Portugal and a negative coronavirus test in Spain.

SURPRISING FACT

The U.K. has one of the highest vaccination rates in the world. Nearly 50% of residents are fully vaccinated against the virus, while 66% have had at least one shot. Nonetheless, it is battling an average of over 14,600 new cases per day. Deaths are still low at just over 17 new coronavirus-linked deaths each day.

Hong Kong To Ban Flights From U.K. As More Countries Move To Block Delta Variant Spread

Bro,

a bit late to block B.1617.2 aka Delta variant as we already have over 800 cases of the Delta variant in Sinkiestan.

just not sure how good our borders are against the Delta plus variant, with the K417N mutation. I proposed to call it the KNN variant in an earlier thread.

The Ah Neh variant is everywhere so what difference does it make which countries are on the flight ban list?

And even if the Delta variant is adding to the case count vaccinations and natural immunity mean that it has made absolutely no difference to the IFR as can be seen from the graph below.

Just carry on with life and all will be well.
