Boeing 777s have been grounded around the world after the US aviation regulator announced an investigation into the United Airlines flight that suffered an engine failure on Saturday, showering debris over homes in Denver.

The aircraft’s manufacturer recommended the grounding of all 777s using the same Pratt and Whitney 4000 engines, which includes scores operating across the US, Japan and South Korea.

United had already announced that it would voluntarily and temporarily remove 24 of its planes from active service while investigations are carried out.

And following the incident, which saw the afflicted aircraft return to land safely at Denver International Airport, Japan’s transport ministry also directed Japan Airlines (JAL) and ANA Holdings to suspend the use of 777s with P&W4000 engines.

A Japanese transport ministry statement noted that on 4 December 2020, a JAL flight from Naha Airport in Japan to Tokyo International Airport returned due to a malfunction in the left engine. The Boeing 777 plane in that case was similar to the 26-year-old aircraft involved in the new United Airlines incident.

Passengers on Saturday’s flight described a large explosion shortly after take-off, and video from inside the plane showed the right engine engulfed in flames.

Later, police in Colorado released pictures that showed large pieces of plane debris on the ground outside a home and in a field, where witnesses said they were forced to run inside to take cover.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has said that an initial examination of the plane suggests most of the damage was confined to the right engine.

But the Federal Aviation Administration said that after reviewing all available safety data, a probe should be opened into all similar aircraft. “The inspection interval should be stepped up for the hollow fan blades that are unique to this model of engine, used solely on Boeing 777 airplanes,” said the agency.

Boeing said 69 such planes were in service, and recommended airlines suspend their use until the FAA inspection is complete.

Earlier, a spokeswoman for South Korea’s transport ministry had said that they were monitoring the situation but no action had yet been taken.

In February 2018, a Honolulu-bound Boeing 777 which was being operated by United Airlines suffered an engine failure and a cowling fell off about 30 minutes before the plane landed safely.

The planes are of a generation that is being phased out by several airlines around the world, including Delta Airlines which said in May 2020 said that they were retiring 18 such planes from their fleet.

Its only those with P& W engines.
Maybe good news for boe8ng eith their new B777 X if older aircraft are replaced.

this is only for the 772 with the pratt and whitney 4000 engines, the 77W is unaffected. old engines, metal fatigue issues.

they join rolls royce for engine problems, lets see how they decided to inspect these going forward

IF the engine doesn't suck, then I worry. And so should everyone onboard.
Rolls-Royce Faces Delays to Solve Trent 1000 Engine Issues
Following criticism from Emirates CEO Tim Clark, Rolls-Royce is encountering obstacles in its attempt to upgrade its Trent 1000 engine.

Rolls-Royce Plc will incur additional delays in fixing problems with its Trent 1000 aircraft engine, hampering efforts to get grounded Boeing Co. 787 Dreamliners back in the air.
The challenge of replacing engine components with less-than-expected durability will delay the return of normal service until the second quarter of next year, the company said in a statement on Friday. Rolls-Royce shares fell as much as 5%.
The Trent 1000 engine affects carriers including Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA, which has had to “wet lease” planes complete with crews to maintain long-haul services. Europe’s air-safety regulator called on 787 operators to undertake accelerated engine inspections after some Trent 1000 turbine parts wore out earlier than expected.
Design glitches have plagued the Trent program since 2016, leading to about $1.7 billion in charges, while eating into Rolls-Royce’s share of turbines for 787 jets against rival engine maker General Electric Co. Last year, the company said the intermediate pressure turbine blades, which had already been flagged for replacement, weren’t lasting long enough to meet maintenance schedules.

If it were a china made airplane, they would have covered it all up, videos deleted and witnesses warned not to speak or else.
I will take western planes anytime vs china planes

Current c919 uses parts made in the west until such time china can replicate the equipment and dump the western supplier like they did to russians arms equipment, high speed rail and motor cars.

It turns out, the problematic trent 1000 engines on boeing 787 are made in sinkie.

Many years ago, some of my clients were already qualified to manufacture and machine these jet engines' fan blades. You'll need at least a 5-axes CNC machine to "cut" them to its highly complex profile.

Yes, and as long as they suck the plane would be fine. FYI, jet engines are supposed to suck in air, mix it with the burning jet fuel in order to provide propulsion.
If you own the planes with the unfortunate engines, it sucks for the owners but cannot suck in air.
