The Singapore police are advising the public to be alert to scams involving the sale of bak kwa, the dried-meat snack which is popular during the Chinese New Year period.

In a media release on Thursday (4 February), police said that scammers would post post advertisements on Facebook, claiming to sell “Hock Moon Hiongbak kwa – a famous brand based in Malaysia – in Singapore.

Victims were required to place orders via Facebook and make full payment via PayNow or bank transfer.

They only discovered that they have been scammed when they did not receive the bak kwa and realised that the seller had become uncontactable.

Sounds like another jiuhu kia scam.

They are easy to recognize, unless you are blinded by greed.

Malaysia and China supplies a lot of raw frozen bakkwa to Singapore. To be honest, these versions are pink pork slimes with a lot of preservatives and favorings.

Many retailers like turning them into their private-label products.

I recommend only buying from the few reputable brands, that use real meat.

This is as real as it can be. Beware of the brands that employ a lot of FTs and aggressively open many outlets, and some of them overseas.
