Why the harsh lighting ? Don't you bounce your flash ?nicely done. Can't get any better than real.
Huh? I used the hardest light possible with a magnum reflector. If I bounced it off something I might as well use a softbox.

Liddat you're better off without a reflector. Doesn't make any difference.
Without a reflector you'll get light spill all over the place and it will be impossible to get the deep shadows.
Light-spilling is controlled with a snoot, not with a reflector.
Reflector is supposed to soften the light, not making it harsh-looking.

You bounce flash in order to even out light and eliminate unwanted shadows. On the other hand if you want to create shadows you do the opposite and do your best to ensure there is no light spill.
It depends what the image is for. If you're taking a headshot for a corp website the light set up is different from a set up that is designed to create a more dramatic mood.
Don't feel guilty. Camera companies are too greedy and liken their cameras to mobile phones, expecting people to upgrade whenever there's a newer model.
You get more pleasure from a 5-year old camera attached with vintage lenses.
Here's an example taken with a vintage Russian lens with a cult status. The swirly-looking blur background, aka bokeh, is a characteristic of the lens and is not found anywhere in modern lenses.

Snoot is for spot lighting.
I use a magnum reflector with a grid.

Try using a snoot and then use a reflector with a grid for the same subject. I'm pretty sure you'll prefer what the grid does. They usually come in sets of 3 ie 5deg, 10deg and 20deg.
