SINGAPORE - Lawyer and opposition politician Lim Tean is facing two pending bankruptcy claims totalling about $1.45 million, a Straits Times check has found.

One of the applications, filed by DBS Bank in October last year over a debt of $549,378, was heard in the High Court on Monday (June 22) in chambers via video conference.

The case has been adjourned for three weeks.


DBS declined to comment, as the case is still ongoing in court.

Mr Lim, who represented himself, did not respond to phone calls seeking comment.

The other application was filed by a trading company, Sing Wing (I & E), in May this year.

Records show that the company is seeking to make Mr Lim a bankrupt over a debt of about $905,000. A hearing for this application is scheduled on July 16.

Mr Lim is founder and secretary-general of Peoples Voice party, which had its registration approved in October 2018.

Last Friday, he announced on Facebook that his party would be contesting Jurong GRC in the upcoming election.

The Singapore Constitution disqualifies an undischarged bankrupt from being a Member of Parliament.

In February last year, Mr Lim avoided bankruptcy in proceedings brought by a Shanghai businessman over a US$150,000 ($209,000) loan.

Mr Huang Min, who had lent Mr Lim the money, filed a bankruptcy application in 2018 when the sum remained unpaid even after the Chinese national won a court judgment to recover it.

Mr Lim appealed against the court order to repay the sum, but eventually withdrew his appeal.

Mr Huang withdrew his bankruptcy application after Mr Lim submitted two cheques - one day ahead of a scheduled hearing - to settle the debt and legal costs.

The PAP is not going to lose. We grassroots leaders have been conducting surveys for our grassroots for years regarding issues ranging from town council cleanliness, jobs security, housing, and national issues. We then compare these survey results to actual GE results. After doing this for some years, we get a good idea of how the elections would go just by looking at these survey results. We don't even need to ask sinkies who they plan to vote for.

Lim Team is going to be bankrupt because he was a lousy businessman who owed people too much money. It has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with his incompetence in commerce.

Election season is upon us and the smearing of Opposition Politicians is well under way. I find it laughable that the MSM is trying to smear me as someone who is about to be bankrupted, and therefore not eligible to be a candidate. They claim to have tried to contact me, but I never received any calls or queries from them! They are trying to pull cotton over the eyes of the voters.

This is not the 1st time they have resorted to trying to smear me by suggesting that I may be bankrupted.

Let me make it clear. I am not going to be bankrupted, and it is total rubbish that I owe $1 450 000!

It will be abundantly clear to observers that Peoples Voice presents the biggest threat to the establishment and the elites because we represent the voices of the ordinary hardworking people of Singapore, who feel abandoned by the very people who claim to represent them. Our support has surged and so many have joined us during the lockdown. We are a much bigger party than we were 2 months ago.

These people who have betrayed the aspirations of the working class, who are increasingly attracted to the ideals Peoples Voice stand for, hope that I will be crippled and will not be at the starting gate for the General Elections.

Have no fear! I will be there leading the brave warriors of Peoples Voice into battle and we will be the ones having the last laugh at these people who wish me and Peoples Voice ill! And we won’t be hunkering down either. We will be pounding them until all their incompetence are revealed to the Singaporean voters!

And of course I will always speak up for ordinary Singaporeans who aspire to a better future for themselves and their Next Generation!

What's the point of all this incessant boasting?

Other than delighting the usual 25% hardcore anti-PAP crowd, it's just going to turn off all the centrists and apatheists resulting in yet another sub-par electoral performance.
