I think religion is a powerful tool to manipulate the masses.
Rome can only conquer just a part of Europe and areas around the Mediterranean plus Britannia at its peak.
But when they created the roman Catholic church, it and its derivatives went on to conquer and colonise three continents.

Think of religion as a set menu in a restaurant: you choose one and it comes with a variety of dishes, appetizers, soups, main course, dessert etc which have been picked for you. Some items you like, other items not so much. But since you're already committing to the entire set, you 'force' or try to convince yourself that the items you really don't like are actually 'not too bad'. And you try to obtain confirmation bias from those who agree with you, and in turn try to convince others to choose the same set menu.

Spirituality is a la carte dining.
