China’s most advanced vehicle-mounted howitzer, the PCL-181, recently entered service with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command, the theater command confirmed on Thursday. With technical details revealed for the first time, experts say the weapon is one of the best in the world.
In the past few days, troops of a brigade under the Eastern Theater Command received the 155mm vehicle-mounted howitzer, which made its public debut as a newly developed weapon at the National Day military parade on October 1, 2019 in Beijing, the Eastern Theater Command confirmed on its Sina Weibo account on Thursday.
The statement came after China Central Television (CCTV) on Wednesday reported the weapon had been commissioned. This report is also seemingly the first time an official source has identified the designation of the howitzer as the PCL-181.
Neither the Eastern Theater Command nor CCTV has specified how many howitzers were included in this delivery, but at least 18 were seen in the report.
The 155mm wheeled vehicle-mounted howitzer weighs only 25 tons, making it much lighter and faster and with longer endurance than the previous self-propelled howitzer which uses crawler tracks and weighs more than 40 tons, the CCTV report said, noting it can also hit targets at longer ranges with increased firepower.
This data means the PCL-181 not only has high mobility, but it can also be transported by large transport aircraft like the domestically made Y-20, which has a cargo capacity of more than 60 tons, a military expert who requested to remain anonymous told the Global Times on Thursday.
A single Y-20 can likely carry two PCL-181s, or a combination of one PCL-181 and one 30 ton-class Type 15 lightweight main battle tank, both of which are choices that offer frontline troops immense firepower, the expert said, noting that this will give the Chinese military more tactical flexibility in strategic transport and quick reaction operations.
The vehicle the howitzer is mounted on has a large driver’s cab that can accommodate all six artillery squad members, protecting them with bulletproof glass that enhances the unit’s survivability.
Digitalized control panels can be found in the cab, and this highly digitalized system allows artillery gun deployment with the press of a button, automatic gun calibration and half-automatic ammo reload. This can shorten the preparation time to shoot the weapon, giving the artillery stronger combat capabilities, according to the report.
China has been leading the world in the artillery sector for many years, and the PCL-181 has set yet another example, the expert said.

The Z-20 can operate in oxygen-depleted plateaus thanks to its powerful homemade engine, Chen Guang, vice general manager of Avicopter, the helicopter branch of Aviation Industry Corporation of China that developed the helicopter, told the Global Times previously.
Joining the Z-20 is the modified Z-8G large transport helicopter displayed at the Fifth China Helicopter Exposition held in Tianjin in October.
Focusing on plateau operations, the Z-8G is the first of its kind in China and can take off from 4,500 meters above sea level with a ceiling higher than 6,000 meters.
At Airshow China 2018, the Chinese Air Force unveiled the GJ-2 armed reconnaissance drone, which has a higher ceiling and can carry more payload than the previous GJ-1. Reports said it can be used to patrol the long border in high-altitude areas like Tibet.
These specially designed weapons have boosted the Chinese military’s combat capabilities in high-altitude regions, enabling it to better safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, Chinese analysts said.

As an Indian, let me say what I think about this article and this issue.

First: the border between India and China had been repeatedly redrawn by the British during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The historical Kashmir territory had been a Mughal Empire possession, then been taken from it by the Sikh Empire, which in the early 1840s was in turn annexed by the Brits and Kashmir put under a puppet Hindu Dogra dynasty. The basic importance of Kashmir to the Brits was that it was a frontier state against “Russian expansion” like Afghanistan, which was not at the time (until the Afghan Independence War of 1919) permitted by the Brits to have a foreign policy. The space between Kashmir and Afghanistan was left to Tibet, which in turn was under the control of the weak and powerless Chinese Empire.

After the Chinese Revolution of 1911 the Brits – who had invaded Tibet in 1903 – decided to cut away Tibet from China before the latter could get strong. They therefore called a “Simla Conference” in 1913 at the Indian city of Simla, now Shimla. The participants were the Dalai Lama’s people, the British under one Henry MacMahon, and one single Chinese representative, Ivan Chen. At that conference the Brits unilaterally divided Tibet into two – an Outer (southern) Tibet that was to be under Chinese “suzerainty” but with no Chinese “sovereignty”, and an Inner (northern) Tibet under both Chinese suzerainty and sovereignty. That is, South Tibet would be explicitly Chinese in name only. MacMahon also redrew the border between the two entities of British India and Outer Tibet, claiming what is now the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh in the east, calling the new border Britain unilaterally imposed the MacMahon Line. At the same time it explicitly relinquished a large part of its claimed borders of Kashmir in the West, leaving the plateau of Aksai Chin in Ladakh to Outer Tibet. The Dalai Lama’s regime eagerly agreed, but the Chinese did not.

No Chinese government, Nationalist or Communist, has ever at any time recognised the validity of the Simla Conference or the MacMahon Line. This is essential to remember. And it did not happen during the Chinese Civil War as this article claims, it happened long before that.

In 1947 India became “independent”, though its military was still equipped and led by British officers. When they left, Nehru began a policy of deliberately promoting incompetent yes-men to the Army’s top ranks so as to not have a military coup. China was still weak and just recovering from the Civil War and was embroiled in Korea, and, seizing the opportunity, in 1951 India invaded Tibetan territory that was explicitly left to Outer Tibet in the east by the MacMahon Line, the monastery town of Tawang, and annexed it. On 1 July 1954 Nehru also unilaterally extended the Indian claim line in Kashmir to re include Aksai Chin, which had been left to Tibet by MacMahon. My father, a young man at the time, himself confirmed to me that before 1954 Indian maps always depicted Aksai Chin in China.

India cannot simultaneously claim the MacMahon Line in the east and Aksai Chin in the west. The two are mutually exclusive. It cannot be legally done.

China had repeatedly suggested through the 1950s a straightforward swap – Aksai Chin for the MacMahon Line. India refused every time.

During the late 1950s to mid 60s, too, India hosted CIA listening posts in the Himalayas to spy on China. India and the CIA armed and trained Khampa rebels and parachuted and infiltrated them into Chinese Tibet. India – violating its own promise to China to not permit political activities – allowed the fugitive Dalai Lama regime to set up a “government in exile” in Dharmashala near Shimla. American engagement with India against China is nothing new.

As for the current crisis, it’s entirely manufactured by the Modi regime. The regime is desperate to distract attention from a collapsed economy, a ruinous failed lockdown, surging COVID-19 numbers, ravaging locusts, financial criminals who were permitted to escape abroad, rising popular discontent, and no idea how to fix things. It therefore chose to pick a fight with China, which boomeranged badly. The regime media has suddenly fallen silent on the topic while those media not under the regime claim massive further Indian territorial losses in Aksai Chin. It’s not going to end in war anyway. After the border clash in the Galwan Valley, nationalism and hostility against China within India are rising sharply, while Chinese analysts and some reasonable voices inside India warned that New Delhi should cool down the nationalism at home.

India will be more humiliated than after the 1962 border conflict with China if it cannot control anti-China sentiment at home and has a new military conflict with its biggest neighbor, analysts said on Sunday.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Friday that his government has given the armed forces full freedom to take any necessary action, and he also appeared to downplay the clash that killed 20 Indian soldiers and injured more than 70 on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control in the Galwan Valley on Monday.

"Nobody has intruded into our border, neither is anybody there now, nor have our posts been captured," Modi said, referring to Ladakh's Galwan Valley, Reuters reported.

Chinese observers said Modi is trying to respond to the nationalists and hardliners with tough talk, but he understands his country cannot have further conflict with China so he is also making an effort to cool tensions.

Lin Minwang, a professor at Fudan University's Center for South Asian Studies in Shanghai, told the Global Times on Sunday that Modi's remarks will be very helpful to ease the tensions, because as the prime minister of India, he has removed the moral basis for hardliners to further accuse China.





However, if conflict breaks out, China's overwhelming advantages on transportation and military industry will help the People's Liberation Army to acquire an absolute strategic and tactical advantage against the India on the frontline.

"This is why India hasn't dared to launch a full attack against the PLA in decades but keeps creating low-level tensions occasionally," he noted.

Indian forces use weapons bought from different countries which many not coordinate with each other well, not to mention their undisciplined troops who can blow up their own submarine in a dockyard and shoot down a friendly helicopter, observers noted.

Rational voices within India are also calling Modi not to repeat former Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru's mistakes on the China front.

Indian economist Swaminathan Aiyar said in a Saturday report by Indian media outlet the Economic Times that the gap between China and India militarily and economically is five times bigger than it was in 1962. Attempting military adventures in that area is asking to be thrashed again and humiliated on a scale five times bigger than in 1962.

In a potential self-defense counterattack, China will secure its own territory and not likely claim Indian territory after emerging victorious, but the battle will deeply hurt India so much that global position and economy would go backwards to decades ago, Chinese analysts said.

Intensive drills show PLA’s capability in border region

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has been conducting intensive military exercises of multiple dimensions, including high altitude tank and anti-tank drills in Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, large-scale, long-distance maneuver of an army brigade to Northwest China, and nighttime group parachute infiltration, following the fatal clash between China and India in the border region.

These PLA drills not only showed that its forces stationed in border regions have high combat capability, but that troops from across China will also come to their aid, and the PLA can crush any aggression with land-air integrated joint operations, Chinese military experts said on Thursday.

Multiple types of new weapons and equipment including Type 15 lightweight tanks and HJ-10 anti-tank missile systems attached to the PLA Tibet Military Command recently joined a comprehensive live-fire drill in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau at an elevation of more than 4,700 meters, China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Wednesday.

During the exercises, the tanks launched a fire strike on targets several kilometers away. After encountering hostile armored units, anti-tank troops switched to the front and destroyed enemy tanks and armored vehicles. Artillery units were also on the move and conducted precision strikes on enemy targets.

The drills also simulated damage to a friendly tank, which was quickly repaired by a support vehicle.

The main threat China faces on its border with India comes from Indian tanks and armored vehicles, but the Type 15 tanks and HJ-10 anti-tank missiles are very strong counters, Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert and TV commentator, told the Global Times on Thursday.

A brigade under the PLA 81st Group Army of the PLA Central Theater Command also conducted a large-scale, long-distance maneuver to an undisclosed location in Northwest China thousands of kilometers away, after which its multiple rocket launcher systems, howitzers and anti-aircraft systems participated in real combat-oriented drills in unfamiliar terrains, CCTV reported.

Another airborne brigade recently held a daytime and nighttime group parachute infiltration drill featuring a thousand paratroopers, as main combatants were mixed with scouts and artillerymen for maximum combat efficiency, according to CCTV.

Separately, aviation troops of the PLA 77th Group Army tested their helicopter pilots in high-elevation regions, with attack helicopters and transport helicopters participating, said a statement the PLA Western Theater Command released on Thursday.

Previous reports showed that many other forces, including the 75th Group Army of PLA Southern Theater Command and thousands of paratroopers from Central China, have also mobilized to western China.

Song said that while the Western Theater Command is responsible for the defense of the border between China and India, forces from other theater commands can also support it.

While the fatal clash between China and India in the Galwan Valley region is unlikely to escalate into a large-scale military conflict, as such an escalation is against the interests of both sides, the PLA showed they are prepared, analysts said.
