KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is slated to speak to the nation on Sunday (May 10) at 2pm, just two days ahead of the end of fourth phase of the country's movement restrictions.

The speech will be telecast live on TV and on the premier's social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, Malaysiakini news reported.

Malaysia first imposed the movement control order (MCO) on March 18 for two weeks as cases of the coronavirus began to rise sharply.

The MCO has since been extended three more times, each by a period of two weeks, with thelatest one to end after Tuesday - the 56th day of the curbs.

Last week, the health authorities said the country is on a "recovery phase" with new daily cases mostly in double digits in the last three weeks, compared to triple digits in mid-March and first two weeks of April.

The untiring Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the secretary-general of the Health Ministry, who appeared live in news conference daily for nearly two months, took a break from addressing the media live on Saturday.

Malaysia on Saturday reported 54 new cases to bring the cumulative infections to 6,589, and one more death to bring the total fatality to 108.

Under the partial lockdown, everyone was ordered to stay at home and could only leave their homes for essential work, or if they were buying groceries, food or medicines.

Malaysia from Monday (May 4) began what PM Muhyiddin called "conditional MCO" with most businesses allowed to reopen while adopting health precautions, and the authorities lifting most roadblocks.

Mass gatherings such as religious services, concerts, cinemas and theme parks are still barred, and barbers and hairdressers have yet to be given the go-ahead to restart their services.

It isn't clear if PM Muhyiddin would totally lift the MCO, extend the conditional MCO, or introduce a new permutation of the partial lockdown.

Even an illegitimate govt is handling their country’s covid crisis better than our jiakliaobee white scums

how is it an illegitimate government when the PM is chosen by the elected representatives of the people ?

Perhaps Sinkies here don’t know much of jiu Hu kias politics ...you see , all oppies stood on 1 party platform in the last election and that is Anwars party PKR ...DAP the chinese centric party and Bersatu a Malay centric party abandoned their parties to contest the election under 1 logo and 1 party that is PKR .,,so it was PKR that won .,,and PKR president was Anwars wife Wan Azizah ...she should have been the PM and even the Agong offered her ..but they chose Dr.M and the Agong made sure all MPs supporting Dr.M as a PM have a statutory declaration .,.in Essence there must be enough MP suppprt

it the same scenario now .,,Mohideen too proved to the Agong that he had enough MPs support than ...so even if that position had changed there is always a no confidence in the government move where MPs vote to reconfirm or reject a sitting PM

so, where is this illegitimate or backdoor government arise?...that is how the chinks party the DAP saw ...just because the chinks in Malusia wants a puppet PM

He will extend MCO another two weeks, thus preventing parliament from convening to test his legitimacy

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s movement control order (MCO) will be extended for a further month until Jun 9, its fourth extension since it was enforced on Mar 18, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said.

In a special address on Sunday (May 10), the prime minister said even though the country saw many positive developments in its fight against COVID-19, the efforts have not fully succeeded. The MCO was originally scheduled to end on Tuesday.

"Based on public opinion, I realised that people want the government to continue to take the necessary steps to fight against the epidemic.

"Therefore, on the advice of the Ministry of Health and the National Security Council, I would like to announce that the conditional MCO, which was enforced until May 12, will be extended until Jun 9, which is another four more weeks," he said.

The MCO, which took effect since Mar 18 to rein in the spread of COVID-19, has previously been extended three times at a two-week increment.

Under the partial lockdown, non-essential businesses and schools were shut while domestic and international travel was prohibited.

There are signs that the restrictions have successfully brought down the number of new infections in Malaysia. From the initial three-digit hike, new cases slowed to mostly two-digit increase beginning mid-April.

As of Saturday, the country reported a total of 6,589 cases and 108 deaths. Close to 75 per cent of the patients have recovered.

To mitigate the economic impact, Putrajaya rolled out three economic stimulus packages worth RM260 billion (US$60 billion).

Mr Muhyiddin said in his May 1 address that total losses due to the COVID-19 curbs were estimated at RM63 billion.

The government has eased some COVID-19 curbs by allowing the majority of economic sectors to resume their operations beginning May 4 under a “conditional MCO”, in a move welcomed by industry players.

PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - The gloves are off for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and he is preparing to strike back following the hostile moves from the Tun Mahathir Mohamad camp the past week.

Kedah, which is still a Pakatan Harapan (PH) state government, is in Tan Sri Muhyiddin's crosshairs and it is learnt that Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir will be out as Kedah menteri besar by the middle of next week.

If all goes well, the new menteri besar is likely to be Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, the Jeneri assemblyman from Parti Islam Semalaysia (PAS).
