This Singaporean girl wrote on FB that since her glass table top was 'tempered glass', she didn't expect the glass to shatter due to the heat from the mala hotpot.

Unfortunately she got her science wrong : tempered glass simply means that when shattered (eg. due to heat from mala hotpot), the glass will crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards as plate glass.

If you really want a glass table top that won't shatter, buy bulletproof glass (which is illegal in Singapore for civilians). For hotpots, never use glass table tops!

The glass is obviously not tempered. One of the first rules of home fengshui is to have a sturdy dinner table.

There are many grades of tempered glass. Usually the better ones are not clear/transparent. And I don't think they used a coaster

Recommended materials for dining table top, imo, are granite, corian by DuPont or just good old solid wood or even plywood with laminate. Those who use glass (even tempered glass) are asking for trouble.
