The case of Wu Huayan shocked Chinese people after it hit the headlines earlier this week.

The 24-year old woman became seriously malnourished while struggling to study and support her sick brother.

Ms Wu's story also sparked anger at authorities for failing to recognise her plight and help her much earlier.

After the story was reported, donations began pouring in for the college student in the city of Guiyang - reportedly totalling some 800,000 yuan ($114,000, £88,000).

What is Wu Huayan's story?

Earlier, this month, the young woman went into hospital after having difficulty breathing, according to Chinese media.

She was only 135cm (4ft 5ins) tall, weighing barely more than 20kg (43 pounds; three stones).

The doctors found she was suffering from heart and kidney problems due to five years spent eating minimal amounts of food. She said she needed to save money to support her sick brother.

Wu Huayan lost her mother when she was four and her father died when she was in school.

She and her brother were then supported by their grandmother, and later by an uncle and aunt who could only support them with 300 yuan ($42, £32) each month.

Most of that money went on the medical bills of her younger brother, who had mental health problems.

This meant Ms Wu spent only 2 yuan a day on herself, surviving largely off chillies and rice.

The siblings are from Guizhou, one of the poorest provinces in China.

The case sparked an outpouring of concern - and anger at authorities.

Many people on social media said they wanted to help with donations, and many voiced concern about her college not helping her.

One user called her situation "worse than that of refugees in Afghanistan", while another pointed to the extravagant cost of China's 70th anniversary celebrations, saying the money could have been better spent.

Others expressed their admiration at her efforts to help her brother, while also persevering with her studies in college.

Aside from the donations on crowd funding platforms, her teachers and classmates donated 40,000 yuan ($5,700; £4,400), while local villagers collected 30,000 yuan to help her.

Officials released a statement saying Ms Wu had been receiving the minimum government subsidy - thought to be between 300 and 700 yuan a month - and was now getting an emergency relief fund of 20,000 yuan.

"We will keep following the case of this strong-minded and kind girl," the Tongren City Civil Affairs Bureau said.

"We will actively co-operate with other relevant departments to solve the problem according to the minimum living standard and temporary assistance responsibility that the civil affairs department bears."

A Chinese woman starved herself nearly to death — weighing only 47 pounds at 24 years old — so she could save money to support her ailing brother, according to new reports.

Wu Huayan, of China’s Guizhou province, lived on only 2 yuan — just over a quarter — per day for five years, the Independent reported Friday.

The woman, who juggled university studies and two jobs, only allowed herself to eat a bun or a portion of rice each day.

Since her parents’ death several years ago, Wu’s been the sole caretaker for her brother, who requires mental health treatment, according to reports. The specific nature of his illness is unclear.

Wu is only about 4 feet 4, and now suffers from heart damage, hair loss, ringing in the ears and insomnia, the state newspaper People’s Daily reported. She also reportedly struggles to walk properly and afford her own medical expenses.

Her plight only came to light when she was taken to the hospital with severe malnutrition, the Independent reported.

When her story became public, the government lent a hand, providing an emergency relief fund of 20,000 yuan ($2,841) to the siblings, the BBC reported
.

Word of her case exploded on social media — prompting sympathetic donors to shell out about $66,760 so far, according to the Independent.

Guizhou is one of the country’s poorest provinces, and stories of such dire poverty are not uncommon, according to People’s Daily.

Some Chinese social media users criticized the government for not taking action sooner.

This is why we should import ATBs from rural China to be maids. Without a language barrier, things get done far more efficiently.

The Malays prefer Indon maids and the ang mohs prefer Pinoy maids, and after they get their choice pickings of maids, there just aren't enough maids remaining to go around.

Problem is, instead of being maids, they may turn into concubines.

I hope they won't restrict to one china maid per household.

A Chinese student who lived on 2 yuan (42 cents) a day and suffered from severe malnutrition has died after months in hospital in south-western China.
Wu Huayan, 24, was a third-year vocational college student from Tongren, Guizhou Province, one of the poorest regions in China.
She was living on a government subsidy of 300 yuan ($63) a month and looking after her younger brother, Wu Jianglong, who suffered from mental health issues, according to the local government.
Both of her parents had died when she was younger.
"The most difficult time was to eat only one steamed bun per day, I eat plain rice mixed with pickled chilli for five years, but there was no other way," Ms Wu told Chinese newspaper Chongqing Morning Post from hospital.
"After our parents died, we had no income. I had to go to school and cure [my brother's] diseases, I would do anything to save money."
In October last year, Ms Wu was admitted to hospital with swollen legs and breathing problems after years of poverty and food deprivation.
She was diagnosed with having serious heart and kidney problems which required surgery.
Ms Wu was reportedly 135 centimetres tall and weighed just 21.6 kilograms at the time.
"Grandma and dad both died because they had no money to cure diseases. I don't want to experience that, waiting for death because of poverty," she told the newspaper.

Her story quickly made international headlines and sparked a public appeal in China which subsequently raised more than 1 million yuan ($210,600) for her medical treatment through a national charity, China Charities Aid Foundation for Children (CCAFC) .
Tongren Civil Affairs Bureau said in a statement that Ms Wu was getting an emergency relief fund of 20,000 yuan ($4,200) from the local government.
Despite the outpouring of support from the public, Ms Wu's health continued to deteriorate and reports said she died in a hospital in Guiyang on January 13.
Ms Wu's sudden death prompted nationwide outrage, with questions over where the money went and whether the charity and government could have done more to save her.
The state-run newspaper People's Daily commented on social media, "is the patient's death an accident or is there something fishy about the charity".
"If you're greedy for this kind of money, won't you feel guilty?" a user named Tademaoyu said on Weibo, criticising the charity.
"Where has the Ministry of Civil Affairs been? There is no oversight of such institution," another user named Guishiguang said.
The CCAFC, a national organisation governed by the Ministry of Civil Affairs, confirmed that only 20,000 yuan ($4,200) was sent to Ms Wu's hospital to cover the medical fees.
"The remaining amount was expected to be reserved for surgery and rehabilitation treatment," the charity said in a statement.
"We will communicate with Wu Huayan's relatives as soon as possible to understand their wishes and will explain the subsequent use of donation to the public in a timely manner."
China has said it is determined to eliminate poverty in the country by the end of this year.
Since the Chinese economic reform of 1978, nearly 800 million people have been lifted out of poverty, and the poverty rate has dropped from 97.5 per cent in 1978 to 1.7 per cent in 2019.
