My personal opinion is the japs are actually the more primitive people in north east asia...they never really had a unique culture like the koreans and chinese...hokkaido aside visit china or korea in dec or jan and feel the difference in the climate between minus single digits in japan to minus double digits in china and Korea...the colder it is the more ingenious ways are taught of to survive...an example would be the difference in their methods of preserving food...
