Serious see pple suffer, you happy

are you the kind who see pple suffer and secretly happy over their misfortune?

why do pple behave like this?
It's called schadenfreude.

Schadenfreude (/ˈʃɑːdənfrɔɪdə/; German: [ˈʃaːdn̩ˌfʁɔʏ̯də] (listen); lit. 'harm-joy') is the experience of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, or humiliation of another.

Schadenfreude is a complex emotion, where rather than feeling sympathy towards someone's misfortune, schadenfreude evokes joyful feelings that take pleasure from watching someone fail. This emotion is displayed more in children than adults; however, adults also experience schadenfreude, though generally concealed.[1]

thxs ah meng for pointing out.

  • Aggression-based schadenfreude
primarily involves group identity. The joy of observing the suffering of others comes from the observer feeling that the other's failure represents an improvement or validation of their own group's (in-group's) status in relation to external (out-groups) groups. This is, essentially, schadenfreude based on group versus group status.
  • Rivalry-based schadenfreude is individualistic and related to interpersonal competition. It arises from humans' desire to stand out from and out-perform their peers. Another person's misfortune elicits pleasure because the observer now feels better about their personal identity and self-worth, instead of their group identity.
  • Justice-based schadenfreude comes from seeing that behavior seen as immoral or "bad" is punished. It is the pleasure associated with seeing a "bad" person being harmed or receiving retribution. Schadenfreude is experienced here because it makes people feel that fairness has been restored for a previously un-punished wrong.

schadenfreude it is. but i always find all these definitions overly complex. all the three reasons have a common starting point. A person who in some shape or form has feelings of inadequacy or unhappiness. very few people are immune to schadenfreude. A person who is really successful in money, may not have a loving partner, so feels joy when he sees someone else get dumped. This same person may not even blink when another person has a nice car. Conversely, someone who has no nice car may enjoy someone in a nice car getting into an accident but have no feelings of schadenfreude when he sees another person in a relationship.

We are all usually inadequate or unhappy about some part of our lives no? I've not met many who are totally happy.

actually sweetie, I think your example above different. I think your example is filed under self-righteous vindication. It's slightly different. Schadenfreude need not have any input from the observer. Whereas, by putting an input, you are involving yourself in another person and that changes the dynamics. For background info, schadenfreude is "shameful joy" in German. When you give good advice, there's nothing to be ashamed of, but the joy is similar.
