At the entrance to the Korean supermarket, a notice stating "Stop the sale of Japanese goods that do not reflect history" (Asahi Shimbun)
Overseas Network July 7th Since the Japanese government has adopted "economic retaliation" measures against South Korea to restrict the export of semiconductor materials to South Korea, the recent "resistance of Japanese goods" in South Korea has increased, and there is a tendency to continue to ferment.
According to the Japanese "Asahi Shimbun" reported on the 7th, recently, in some supermarkets in Seoul, South Korea, Japanese beer and other goods from Japan have all been removed. On social media, many Korean netizens have called on Koreans not to travel to Japan, and the momentum is growing. Japanese media said that many Koreans have turned their dissatisfaction with the Japanese government into Japanese products and culture. Although the impact may be limited to the current stage and is temporary, most Japanese companies are uneasy about this.
On the 6th, a notice was posted in a supermarket store in the residential street of Yangchuan District, Seoul City, which read “Do not sell Japanese goods”. Japanese seasonings and convenience foods that were previously sold were not found. 4 cans of 10,000 won (about 60 yuan) of Sapporo beer was originally a hot sale, but the supermarket manager said: "For the country, decided not to sell. Sales will be reduced, but before Japan withdraws 'trade revenge' I will continue to do this."
Koreans stepped on the cardboard box to protest (Japan TBS TV station)
This supermarket is a member of the Korean Market Association. On the 5th, the Korea Market Association held a meeting near the Japanese Embassy in South Korea to announce the suspension of the sale of Japanese goods. At the scene, the staff of the association stepped on the cardboard boxes bearing the Japanese corporate logo and broadcasted this picture to all of Korea. Korean media said that about 230 stores were involved in boycotting Japanese goods, including convenience stores, and at least 100,000 people were mobilized.
On July 1, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced that it would restrict the export of three semiconductor materials used to manufacture televisions and smart phones to South Korea. In addition, the Japanese government’s move to remove South Korea from the list of “white countries” means cancelling the preferential treatment of Korean imports of Japanese products. The Japanese side said that the reason for adopting the above measures is that "the trust relationship between Japan and South Korea has been seriously damaged."
According to statistics from the Korea Trade Association, South Korea’s semiconductor exports in 2018 reached US$126.7 billion, accounting for 21% of total exports. Japan’s restrictions on the export of three semiconductor materials are self-evident for the Korean semiconductor industry. Some media also said that if Japan restricts the long-term export restriction, Korean companies may seek alternative procurement targets from the global supply network and reduce their dependence on Japan, which may not be a good thing for Japanese companies.
