The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that it responded to a call for assistance at 78 Airport Boulevard at 3.20pm.

The child was released by SCDF using rescue tools, it added.

An eyewitness told CNA that the incident happened at basement two and that the staff were alerted to the incident immediately.

The eyewitness added that she could hear the child screaming and the sound of drilling as rescue efforts were carried out.

A spokesperson for Jewel Changi Airport Development said in response to CNA's queries that the boy's foot was brushing along the sides of the escalator when the incident took place.

"The child was assessed by medical personnel onsite, and he will undergo further checks at a hospital," the spokesperson said in a statement.

The child was taken to KK Women's and Children's Hospital by an SCDF ambulance.

"We advise all shoppers to stay vigilant, especially with children when riding on escalators at all times," Jewel Changi Airport said in its statement.

escalators are supposed to be designed to be child-safe and moron-proof. apparently, the design is wanting. sometimes i use the brush along the sides to "brush" my shoes.

Clear voice instructions were given at the start of the escalators- “Please stand within the yellow lines, please hold your child’s hands.”; likewise towards the end of the escalators- “Please mind the gaps.”

Safety warnings not adhered to, period. Be glad the escalator didn’t buckled, opened and start chewing the whole boy up like how some escalators do in PRC.

Not sure if you noticed, certain parts of the floor at Jewel (can’t remember which section of which level) vibrates significantly, and rather occasionally.

The vibrations seemed similar to those that you would feel when you’re eating Pho at Bedok Mall, then the buses coming in or out, somewhat similar but there’s still some subtle differences- you need to feel it yourself.

That’s why I said that brat totally deserves it. If the parents did their job and looked after their kids instead of looking at their phones, and/or be distracted by other things, this unfortunate incident wouldn’t have happened.

It starts at an early age. My opinion is that full-day kindergartens and the extinction of sand playgrounds has made kids of today soft and weak.

Being constantly distracted by your phone during your formative years also doesn't help.
