I miss the Singapore in the 90s

It really was a different world then.

In the 60's, wedding banquets were either held by caterers or in those restaurants in New World, Great World. The tin of 555 State Express on each table, guests arriving were greeted and invariably offered a cigarette. Everyone drank as much as possible, no drink driving laws but then nobody is rich enough to drive. Guests bring their whole family members along on a $20 angpao.

Close family members or friends were given dinner leftovers to take home. These leftovers consisted of food not consumed, collected and put in large pots and mixed, so it may contain veggies, pickles, pieces of chicken or other meats, fish. Younger readers may be freaked out but these formed my 'best' meals then.

I earned my first pay during the mid and end year school holidays at the Bata premier store at North Bridge Road, from Sec 2 to 4. $4 day and happy. Life was so much simpler. Only discos then was Golden Venus and Pink Pussycat at Orchard Road. Was brought in once to both by a classmate whose brothers played in the band. I was like WOW!

Yes, I can't wait to vote! I used to worry about the quality of the opposition, but now after the billions lost and invasion by foreigners, I don't give a damn anymore. I think it is worse to be reduced to prisoner in my own country when I have no place to escape from being swarmed by foreigners and forever fearful of no job and not enough money for retirement.

oei...sound scary...hope you got a escape plan!

Huh you mean losing tens of billions of people's money and no accountability is not scary?

Escape plan...take a look at the living in jb thread in this forum and see how many already planning to move to Jb as it is....

Singapore in the eighties even better. people still understand malay, including taxi drivers.
todays singapore shouldn't be in a malay archipelago.

Agreed fully. Remember fondly how we use to wait for the leftovers from Wedding dinners.

Thanks for the memories.

Great tasting they were, aren't they? Give it to my son today, he'll say, 'Yucks, that's leftovers, gross!'

We have to wait till all the elders are seated but not before seeking permission before allowed to pick up our chopsticks. Totally unheard off today.

Chicken was something of a luxury. On a salary on $30 to $50 a month, a chicken costs like $5/bird. Only on our birthday would we be served a drumstick. Other occasions when chicken were served were the 15th and 30th of the month, and on certain auspicious days like dieties' birthday, CNY etc.

Vendors hawked their ice-cream, kok-kok noodles, char-tau-kway, right at the doorsteps. Our ice cream vendor home-made his, one of the best in my memory bar none. The smoothest corn, durian and red bean ice cream. Today I could only get the red bean ones from Potong which brings back the nostalgia, even then a poor cousin.

We walked about 3 km to Primary School, come rain and even floods. The kids today don't know what they're missing, ferried by mini buses. We'd catch spiders, grasshoppers along the way, explore disused houses, play the occasional 'tikam' at grocery stores with our 5 cts daily allowance which we invest in a sort of interest-free tontin. Can remember singing Negara-ku in school as well.

Marbles game like 'banda' were favorite games, as were kuti-kuti, chateh when in season. During recess, rougher games ruled - hantam bola with really solid rubber balls. Blue-black bruises were not uncommon.

Anyone want to comment on the pirate taxis? I was too young and also family was too poor to indulge in that, only the occasional trishaw to the market with my grandpa.

Last time, walk don't know how many kilometers just to go to free buddhist clinics even when damn sick. No money. Nowadays, the A&E fucking full.

Haha I'm a 70s baby, 70s was definitely a good time! In the 70s, citizens are Number 1 and foreigners tried to integrate into society. Now citizens are number last and foreigners dont' even bother to integrate, they speak their own language, behave anyway they wish to behave, in short they're like the king here!!
If you are a 70s baby, you probably in your late 40s now. Soon to hit big FIVE ZERO. Almost half a century old, don't curse and use vulgarities hokay. Not good for your body and soul. Lol :D

You were so confident that your move to JB was the correct decision in 2011. You even called it your "Escape plan". What happen now? Wrong decision? Bad decision? Miscalculated decision? Or simply penny wise pound foolish?

They should scrap the NDP and channel the funds to living and medical benefits for senior citizens. That is the least they can do as they always have no money for senior citizens but plenty of money for YOG, new citizens, lost in investments etc.
This, I absolutely agree with you. You are spot on! Millions of dollars blow up in the sky for fireworks and cause smoke pollution. Fuck PAP!

Couple Of Points:

1. The title should either be "I miss the Singapore OF the 90s." or "I miss Singapore IN the 90s."

2. All forummers who posted in this thread - please fall in!

Obviously it’s a bad decision meeting ccb Malaysian criminals and sinkie traitor dogs and bitches like you. It’s an adventure gone horribly wrong. I was too stupid and naive to have faith in human pests.
