约旦河西岸是以色列在第三次中东战争中占领的，根据联合国相关决议，以色列在占领区修建的定居点不合法。如今那里生活着40万犹太人和260万巴勒斯坦人。巴以双方本就高度对立的紧张情绪，已禁不起新的强烈刺激。

巴以冲突已经持续半个多世纪。当前，以色列在军事、经济、科技等方面，都处于空前优势地位。阿拉伯世界四分五裂，对巴勒斯坦所能提供的实际支持越来越少，形不成能与以色列抗衡的力量。强大的以色列，又加上一个世界最强大国家的强力支持，对已处于绝对弱势地位的巴方步步紧逼——这是一幅极不对称的画面。
中东尤其巴以，正是国际政治冷酷现实的缩影。在这里，强权不断践踏公理，拷问良知。以色列和美国的不少做法，都有悖国际法和国际公理，但又是中东土地上的长期现实。这是国际政治令人心寒之处。在这里，同情心所能发挥的作用是有限的。
美国是当年中东和平进程的启动者，但巴以和谈自2014年4月中断后就一直停滞了。华盛顿放弃了在中东问题上的公平立场，也就放弃了在中东和平进程中的调停者位置。中东的地缘政治因此进一步失衡，但也孕育、积累着新的潜在危机。
以色列和美国的这些政策，迎合了各自国内的强硬声音，以色列短期内看似也占到了一些具体好处。且阿拉伯世界很弱，一时无力对抗。但美以对周边稳定的破坏，播下了未来冲突的种子，给极端主义动员以更多口实，只会让以色列在阿拉伯世界的包围中更加孤立。如果中东的剧本这样走下去，美国和以色列很难避免长远的代价。
美以应当清醒和克制，尤其是华盛顿，该为中东的激进政策踩一脚刹车了。
