据台湾《中国时报》1月7日报道，台湾“新同盟会”原会长许历农当天发表评论文章，题为《“一国两制”是和平统一最佳方案》
他表示，“一国两制”是中国大陆和平统一的一贯主张，有目标、有方法、有步骤，是当前的最佳方案。而反对“一国两制”的人，只是为反对而反对，不去考虑理由、未来、后果。

许历农在文章中直言，美国和日本最喜欢看到台湾反对两岸统一，因为他们最忌惮中华民族再次崛起，“一旦中华崛起，他们就没有在亚洲、在全球称雄、称霸，耀武扬威的机会了。”
他说，站在美、日的立场，为他们自已国家着想，这也许并没有错。“可是同胞们：我们是炎黄子孙，我们是中国人啦!能为美、日的马前卒，能为美、日的棋子吗？”
至于两岸统一后的前景，许历农认为，两岸统一后，在军事上可以相互支持，互为倚角，台湾每年可以节省庞大的防务预算，用以充实经济、改善民生与社会福利;在经济上可以彼此互补，台湾可借大陆广大的市场与国际关系拓展经贸，“真的是互利双赢的两岸之福!”
许历农现年100岁，是台陆军二级上将，生于安徽省贵池县，曾任陆军官校校长、金门防卫司令部司令官、台“国防部”总政战部主任等职。此外，他还曾是为国民党中央常务委员，后参与新党创党，现仍有新党顾问身份，被尊称为“许老爹”。
许历农到台湾时，其3个月大的女儿许绮燕被留在大陆。不过，父女二人在开放两岸探亲之后得以团聚。
2017年9月2日，许历农发表一封名为“99高龄老人的真心话”的公开信，阐述自己十多年来致力于促统的原因。信中称，“台独”不仅在主观上，在血缘、文化上不应该，更在客观上，即相对形势上不可能。当时，新党主席郁慕明对许老爹坦然发表公开文章说出真心话表示支持。
