PORT DICKSON: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described his victory in the Port Dickson by-election as 'unexpected'.
He said the win with a majority of 23,560 was quite impressive.
The Pakatan Harapan candidate said the huge win indicated that he had received a huge mandate from Port Dickson, including the Malay, Chinese, Indians and Orang Asli voters.
"The popular vote has reached 75 percent compared to the 14th General Election (GE14) which only recorded 48 percent.
"The army's vote which previously didn't favour us, has changed with an increase of 122 percent - it is a huge increase," he told a press conference at the PK operation centre here.
Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president Rafizi Ramli and PKR Communications Director Fahmi Fadzil.
Anwar said he was expected to sworn in as lawmaker in Parliament on Monday.
The incoming PKR de-facto leader also said he had also contacted Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who is also Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman who had expressed his pride over the victory.
The EC tonight announced that Anwar won with a majority of 23,560 votes.
He received 31,016 votes, followed by PAS candidate, Lt Col (B) Mohd Nazari Mokhtar, who received 7,456 votes.
Former Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar, Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad who competed on the Independent ticket, obtained 4,230 votes while Anwar's former personal assistant, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan (82).
Another Independent candidate, Stevie Chan earned 337 votes, Lau Seck Yan (214), Kan Chee Yuen (154).
All five independent candidates lost their deposit.
