Ctazy rich asian writer defaulted ns

most likely too late for ns. will be better for him to go through the regulatory and legal system in sg and either go to jail, pay a fine, or both. and he can write a book about the sexperience. jail mates will be looking for his smooth american cornfed beef arse.
Yes he will just get a slap on the wrist like Melvin Tan,,,,

melvin tan can cum and go in and out of sg now as he wishes. better to face the music (no pun intended) and pay the price. pittance of a price imo. with sg authorities must follow paper work (now unresolved fields in database) and settle the score once and for all. it's a bureaucratic machine to appease. but once red alarms and alerts are cleared everything flows smoothly like type 4 shit.

Yes,,,Melvin tan has benefitted hugely from being a draft dodger,,,but most low SES singkies etc have to sacrifice more for the pap,,,but too bad,,such singkies are the ones that vote for pap anyway,,,,

That fucking bastard! He is as despicable as the likes of Tan Wah Piow and Francis Seow!

Assuming that he did not register for NS, and did not serve NS, he may not have been born before his parents got married.
He may have committed an offence re: the Enlistment Act of Singapore, but I do not believe that he is in the same category as Tan Wah Piow and Francis Seow, because TWP was a student leader, and FS was a reasonably good lawyer who spoke eloquently (and did not commit any crime vis-a-vis NS).

I do not believe that we should alleged that any individual is a bastard, regardless of the non violent crimes that the individual has committed. Besides, in this case, we cannot prove that he is a bastard.

According to his Wikipedia entry, Francis Seow was born in 1928. By the time NS was introduced in 1967, he was already nearly 40 years old!

I do not believe that male Singaporeans born before 1949, were liable for NS, because the Enlistment Act started for those males who turned 18, in 1967.

Actually NS might do him a world of good otherwise he looks like a prime candidate for early onset Type 2 diabetes.

If he had done ns and remained here he would probably be best known for movies such as ahboys to men 3,4,5... ah boys to ah kua, ah boys to ah gong and other similar cinematic masterpieces

He s Crazy (know how to siam NS), rich (earn money not through NS) and is Asian (but got NS defaulter charge on his head. Stupid, should be come Trump citizen immediately.)

Writing a novel which features into a movie puts sinkapore on the world map of entertainment. that should be considered service to the nation

Writing a trashy stereotype movie is bound to make any parents weep w joy.

So what happens after this movie? Go back to writing about other cliches?

I cant believe that such rubbish no originality garbage can be soo popular,,,ang mors must be dumb

A private matter': Crazy Rich Asians actors react to news that author Kevin Kwan defaulted on NS obligations
Actress Janice Koh tells Channel NewsAsia that this "does not in any way detract from the quality of his book or the movie based on it, which is delighting readers and audiences all over the world”.

SINGAPORE: Some of the Singaporean actors from the hit movie Crazy Rich Asians say the news about author Kevin Kwan defaulting on his national service shouldn't affect the way the film is perceived here.
It emerged on Wednesday (Aug 22) that Kwan - author of the best-selling novel on which the film is based - failed to "register for national service (NS) in 1990, despite notices and letters sent to his overseas address", according to the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF).

“Mr Kwan has committed offences under the Enlistment Act, and is liable to a fine of up to S$10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 3 years upon conviction,” said MINDEF.
The news caused a stir online, with many comments on social media, and some Singaporean cast members of the film spoke up about how this could affect the local audience.
Both Janice Koh, who plays Felicity Young in the movie, and Koh Chieng Mun, who plays Neena Goh, told Channel NewsAsia that this is “a private matter" between Kwan and MINDEF.
“It does not in any way detract from the quality of his book or the movie based on it, which is delighting readers and audiences all over the world,” added Janice Koh.

Tan Kheng Hua, who plays Kerry Chu, the mother of protagonist Rachel Chu, agreed.
“Good common sense tells you Kevin Kwan’s gloriously affecting novels and the delightful movie adaptation of it currently connecting people all over the world with joy and positive messages of inclusivity and diversity, and MINDEF, are two completely separate things and should be treated as such,” she said.
For Koh Chieng Mun, the news does not undermine the quality of the best-selling book and critically acclaimed film.
“(Look) how it has been a source of joy and enjoyment to audiences in the United States,” she said. “And now in Asia.”

Actress Amy J. Cheng, who plays Jacqueline Ling in the film, says that ultimately, all that matters is an audience making “a strong connection with a solid piece of work”.
“Crazy Rich Asians is currently the No. 1 box office movie in the US. The books have been on The Straits Times best seller list for the past 50 weeks,” she said. “The audience has spoken.”
Kwan's debut novel about the lives of extremely wealthy Chinese families living in Singapore became an instant global bestseller back in 2013.
The film adaptation, helmed by Asian-American Jon M. Chu with Kwan on board as executive producer, soared to the top of the US box office when it earned US$35 million (S$47.9 million) in its opening five days.
Crazy Rich Asians - the first big, contemporary studio film featuring an all-Asian cast in over 25 years since The Joy Club - has been hailed in Hollywood as a breakthrough for racial representation. The cast boasts Asian actors from all over the world, including Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding, Constance Wu, Gemma Chan and Ken Jeong.
Supported by the Singapore Tourism Board and the Singapore Film Commission, the movie was largely filmed in Singapore and included nearly 300 film crew members who are Singaporean or Singapore permanent residents.
Kwan reportedly grew up in a multi-generational house in Bukit Timah and attended Anglo Chinese School (Primary) until he was 11, before emigrating to Houston, Texas with his parents and two older brothers. He is now an American citizen, according to the reports.
He told Channel NewsAsia in a previous interview that while making Crazy Rich Asians, he was “very conscious of trying to showcase Singapore in as positive a light as possible".
“I really hope Singaporeans will see that this is a love letter to Singapore,” he said. “I wrote what I knew… and I wanted to pay tribute to all types of Singaporeans.”

The story has no originality and its a ripped off of soo many ang mor books and movies about poor gal marry rich guy. Ang mors have been making such movies with such genre for decades. For example, Sabrina, Arthur, Coming to America, Pretty Woman, Titanic, Nottinghill etc,,,,for these stupid movie,,,,and its basically the asian version of the movie Arthur,,and ang mors can fall for such rubbish? no wonder all the ah tiong commies have a field day bashing ang mor lands,,there is a point of redemption,,if the movie goers are all asians, than can say at least the ang mors never fell for such garbage,,,,

Lesser people have made it in life. The rich are not always the brightest, and there is no laws that say things which have been done in the past won't be a success now or in the future. Give it time or a new packagaing, then with a little luck, suckers will bite.

The shows you mentioned are 10 years or older, a whole new generation of suckers have been born and to them these shows will be the new "shows u mentioned above" and those "shows u mentioned above" are recycled reproductions of what the older generations have viewed even earlier... things always come full circle and in waves of trends. 10+ years ago was Joy luck Club --> Crazy rich asians..

Pioneer Generation Package -> Merdeka Generation now.. same same but different? Just my 2c.

Singapore transgender woman facing military service as a man can stay in UK

A transgender woman has been granted sanctuary in the UK to protect her from doing compulsory military service as a man in Singapore.

In the first case of its kind, two judges ruled that she should not be forcibly returned to her home country, where she would be forced to do two weeks of military service a year for the next eight years.

The Home Office argued that she should be sent back to Singapore, claiming any discrimination against her would not amount to serious harm.

The 33-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, came to the UK as a student in September 2004. The Home Office has accepted that she is a woman and the gender on her Home Office ID card is female.

She completed military service as a man in Singapore between December 2001 and June 2004 and has said she felt uncomfortable when serving with men.

Women in Singapore, including transgender women who have undergone reassignment surgery, are not expected to participate in military service. The student has been living as a woman for the past 10 years but has decided against having the full gender reassignment procedure and would therefore face calls to serve.

If she was sent back to Singapore she would have to do two weeks a year of military service until 2023. If she refused she could face 15 months in prison and a fine of $10,000 (£7,000).

She said that having lived as a woman for a decade she would find it intolerable to be treated as a man and has recurrent nightmares about her previous military service.

The case was heard in the first tier of the immigration tribunal by Judge Jackson last November. “I find that the requirement of the appellant to essentially hide her gender and live as a man, even for two weeks a year, would be wholly unreasonable,” Jackson said.

She added that it would be a fundamental breach of her right to a private life and expression of her gender identity.

Her barrister, S Chelvan of No 5 Chambers, argued that if the Home Office returned her to Singapore it would be returning a woman to her home country to be punished as a man.

The Home Office appealed against the judgment but this week a second judge, Judge Harris, rejected the appeal and also found in the woman’s favour.

Earlier this month the all-party parliamentary group on global lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights (LGBT) said the Home Office needed to improve decision making on LGBT cases and review its policy guidance on gender identity claims.

Last month the US state of North Carolina passed the controversial “bathroom law”, requiring transgender people to use the toilet relating to the gender of their birth rather than the gender they identify with. Bruce Springsteen cancelled a concert there in protest against the new law.

The woman’s solicitors, West 12, said: “We are pleased that the plight of this transgender woman has been resolved successfully. It means she can now enjoy living a full life without any compromise to her gender identity or her personal integrity. This is a basic right denied to her in Singapore.”

Absolutely agree and I am with you on this. ;)

What is oxymoron ? That you care to read the book shows it must be worth some salt! You could have made a slight error of judgment. History might finally rank it besides the great classics like "David Copperfield" by Charles Dickens or "Hong Lou Meng".

"...I mean such a book can be best seller? The story has no originality..." Dear. Have you not read the Holy Bible? That if you have faith and "tell the mountains to move yonder, it will move". It is call miracle. ... Mountains will be laid flat... the meek would be raised high... If luck is on your side, your mediocracy... meritocracy overlaps...

Kevin Kwan knew his destiny! And has faith. That he does not need to "so narrowly serve a tiny island"; he is meant to serve the greater human kind. Remember Hector Yee who broke his bond to serve greater humanity? Great people don't think alike as you and me. Do you not see his long hair?
