Rahman Dahlan: Save on LRT3 now, pay more later

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan (pic) says that the RM15.02bil cost reduction for the light rail transit 3 (LRT3) is not savings, but a reduced scale of the project that will cost more to upgrade in the future.

"Come on, stripped down version of LRT3 is not savings at all. It's just a reduced scale LRT," said Abdul Rahman in a series of tweets on Friday (July 13).

"Many years later when the line needs to be upgraded to the original specifications and scale, the cost would surely be more than today," said the former minister in the Prime Minister's Department.

Rahman Dahlan used to hold the former Economic Planning Unit portfolio, which oversaw the implementation of projects, including the LRT3.

Abdul Rahman's comments comes after Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng announced that the final cost for LRT3 had been reduced by 47% to RM16.63bil, saving Malaysians a total of RM15.02bil.

Some steps taken to reduce costs include shelving the construction of five stations with low projected passenger ridership, and reducing the order of 42 sets of six-car trains to 22 sets of three-car trains.

"The idea of LRT and MRT is connectivity. If you reduce terminals or stations, the transport systems lose their effectiveness," said Abdul Rahman.

"To make LRT and MRT successful, you need to cover as many areas as possible. "Medium-density areas today will become high-density in the near future," he said.

Abdul Rahman also noted that the "off and on again" decisions on LRT3 has "played havoc" on certain companies' shares on the local stock market.
 
So the offers of halved the costs for HSR that Lim GE claimed to have received is also like that? Ok lah cut away all the stations except KL and Spore hahaha bye bye batu pahat station. Not bad idea actually.

Or is halved the costs means asking Singapore to pay much more for it and they pay much less for it? That is not called savings but taking advantage!

what the m&ds should do is to officially inform the pappies and pay compensation for all costs that have been undertaken. both sides pay for whatever is in their territory henceforth, and everyone walks away happy - and if they stall the project in their country, the ball is in their court and the pappies can come out smelling like roses :rolleyes:
 
sinkies should be proud and happy of how the smrt is planned, funded, built, and operated. the mudlaysia transit systems will be like the joke that bart is in the bay area. originally the sillycon valley extension from fremont to san jose was supposed to include the irvington and calaveras stations but due to cost overruns they scrapped those stations. the milpitas and berryessa stations are supposed to be in operation in 2017 but due to budget overruns, construction delays, and problems with new trains the service launch is now postponed to 2019. it’s already 2nd half of 2018 and they haven’t finished construction of both stations yet, with probably another delay into 2019 before trains can go on test runs. it will be the same with mudlaysia rapid transit systems. a lot of pussyfooting and shenanigans. nothing gets done on time and within budget. :rolleyes:

in angmo land major construction projects have contractors who kickback ill gotten gains to corrupt tenderers by jacking up overtime charges and delaying projects at the same time. that’s why must close this loophole by penalizing late work and rewarding those who finish ahead of schedule with bonuses and incentives. closing any hole is always difficult as it's tough to remain a virgin for long with so many probing pricks running around.
