As a social worker, I feel compelled to share my thoughts on the recent discussion on the decisions low-income families make (Bad choices, factors beyond their control keep some poor; July 1).

For many low-income families, the problem is not poor decisions, but poor options.

When resources are so limited, no matter which option they choose, some needs will not be met and there is a sacrifice.

I know of a young mother working as a daily-rated teacher-assistant at a childcare centre.

When her child was discharged from hospital and on two weeks' MC, she had to decide between staying home to care for her child or keeping the income coming in.

The circumstances of being low-income also compel them to make "poor" decisions that further disadvantages them financially.

The families I work with often buy standard tickets for one-way trips on public transport instead of using an ez-link card.

This means they have to pay 10 cents more for each trip.

But they do so because the minimum top-up value for an ez-link card is $5 for children and $10 for adults, and they need the cash for daily expenses.

Social workers offer practical help, linking children and young people to self-help groups for tuition programmes, putting up applications for school pocket money, and encouraging the children to set personal goals.

But I am careful not to promise the children that things will be better if they work hard, because I know their efforts might not be enough to overcome the disadvantages in terms of intensity of tuition, access to assessment books, preparation for exams, and so on.

So we, as social workers, must also help to identify the barriers that low-income families face and share them, so that people will understand that poverty is not just an issue of "mindset".

Does the government really bother?? They have only money in their minds.

This government in perpetuity is only interested in generating revenues and winning votes for themselves. The poor will have to fend for themselves largely with the help of private organisations. At the most, the government will provide some token assistance. No money no talk.

The concept of perpetuity is a myth. ;)

Caring for the less fortunate in society runs against the fundamental principle of the PAP. This is a party for the rich and enrichment of its members. Lots of efforts are made to hide this but just follow the money and it is obvious. Low taxes benefit the rich and the PAP ministers. The PAP ministers are living off us. They have our CPF, the reserves as their safety net. For us, we have to fight to get our money back.

all the nobodies will be left behind

How dare the plebian criticize the PAP corrupt system.Wait John Tan activate his ISD to investigate .

sg is blessed with many high ses highrises to jump from and pretty ponding to jump into for the losers.

PAP thinks that the poor are poor because they choose to. The ministers don't say it but the policies reflect that attitude.

They chose to be poor, for they voted for 53 years already for the same people, who kept them poor.

In UK, they even compensate your bus fare to the hospital. And medical is free under NHS.

Singapore is the land of opportunity, where even third world trash can earn a decent income 2k a month if they are willing to put in the hours.if only these so called low income families focused their energies and mental faculties on attaining fiscal abundance and financial stability first rather than succumbing to their bad decisions and desires all day long.....even building a 50k or 100k cushion would go a long long way if u are a low income earner......and for tips on how to streamline and maximise ur lifestyle, read books and websites on minimalism.....I know of a 28 year old philosopher on edmw who only spends $500 a month and gives his parents 1k a month and saves the rest.

It's not hard to go out and find a part time job paying $8 and $9 an hour nowadays, and with a little discipline, one could attain $50k savings within 36 months.then one could in whatever bad decisions or habits they want, including farking and popping out kids.there should be a law prohibiting having kids if u do not have at least 50k savings or 18 months savings whichever is higher or the income.

Leong Sam is right,if u are poor in this country,u must be lazy, stupid or lack discipline.

whatever happen tonthe collected GST monies?which PAP claimz to help the underclass? PAP lied?

Not poor.....just massive cash flow liquidity problems.

Everyone of these poor folks have a positive balance in their CPF accounts...but alas, cannot touch.

The bitch should approach her local RC for help instead of whining to the media at the first opportunity.

The problem is with the pay being held up for one month to the advantage of the business owners..in UK, wages are paid weekly. So workers get constsnt cash flow to manage their account. Being paid monthly is a human rights violation.
