Serious Hypertension or High Blood Pressure

Someone very close to me has been diagnosed with hypertension.

Please share your knowledge and experience on what medication is best, side effects, etc.

Also very interested in dietary and other ways to reduce blood pressure (e.g. yoga, exercise, etc) so medication and undesirable side effects can be avoided.

  • Regular exercise reduces blood pressure significantly ~ 10 to 20mm Hg both systolic and diastolic.
  • No more salty and fatty dishes and that includes MSG.
  • Yoga does help provided it is done properly so that the mind actually relaxes the body. I tried it but it did nothing because I could do the physical part of yoga but was unable to achieve a relaxed mental state.
  • Medication has very few side effects provided you find the right one so it is a matter of experimenting till you find the most suitable combination.
  • Retirement helps considerably. My blood pressure was 150/100 when I was working in stressful Singapore. With medication (ACE inhibitor) it dropped to 130/80 which was borderline but the doc said it was OK.
  • After retirement I started exercising 5 days a week while still on medication and ended up with frequent dizzy spells. My blood pressure had dropped to 110/65. My doc asked me to try halving my dose but it was still too low.
  • I stopped my medication completely and for the last decade my blood pressure has been hovering between 110/75 and 120/80.
  • Note that blood pressure varies throughout the day. It is higher in the morning and lower at night. Stress raises the reading and being in a relaxed state lowers it. It is therefore important to monitor at the same time of the day under the same conditions.
  • If you have a quarrel with someone or you get stuck in traffic the reading will go up (up to 20mm higher) till you are relaxed again.
  • Readings at the doctor's office are always higher especially if getting there involved a stressful drive to the clinic plus there is underlying anxiety caused by work or other stressful life events. In order to monitor accurately buy a good blood pressure monitor and measure at home after unwinding from the day's activities.
  • The PAP causes blood pressure to rise considerably in most Singaporeans. Getting rid of the PAP should definitely help.

It's a common ailment. Just watch the diet, do cardio exercise (slow jog or brisk walk) a few times a week, and avoid stressful fuckers.

Awww!, you beat me to it.

Try eating lesser food cooked outside, be it, hawkers centre, food court, coffee shop or any small, medium or large restaurant; famous or not! Had discussed this with my doctor, everything out there, is loaded with bad oils, plenty of salt, sugars, cheap bad flour, substandard ingredients...anything & everything is loaded like a gun that will shoot you dead!. How not to get Hypertension or HPB?? Rarely anyone who eats out most of the time will get a good reading of 120-130/80...most will go by, living life on the edge with 165-170/90.

Try cooking your own meals, though it may not be easy, but try! or eat moderately, as my doctor will say...watch carefully what you eat & exercise. I does a 2.4km, 30 minutes walk every day, doing a 6,000 steps a day..trying best to reach the 'recommended' 10,000 steps a day, by not using too much the escalator, & certain distances, walk...not take the bus etc.

Reducing or getting rid of the PxP will reduce the BP too...for they are the major causes of HBP...& even strokes...heh heh heh heh

Blood pressure drops immediately after a blood donation but the body replenishes the blood volume pretty quickly and after a couple of weeks it'll be back to square one.

Those who already have hypertension cannot donate blood. The first thing the blood bank staff do is measure blood pressure and it has to be below a preset limit. It used to be 130/90 in my days. I don't know whether it is still the same now.

Use sea salt instead of iodised salt. And cut down on carbs. N use good oils. Margarine is shit. I use lard in my cooking eliminating all hydrolised oil. I am now off my medication n readings are normal

Stop eating wheat, rice, corn, oats, barley, cane sugar and any food derived from grasses and their seeds. Wheat and cane sugar are the main culprits because they are so pervasive, appearing in instant and hawker noodles, pizzas, pratas, bread, pastries, and lots of highly processed convenient foods.

Cardio.... a couple hours at 60% to 70% max heart rate.

Switched to Sea Salt long time back, stop using refined cane sugar ( outside cant control) used Palm Sugars, used pure coconut oil & other good oils, never use palm oil, canola etc. have not used Magarine at home for many years, butter, but go easy.... Lard it seems contains Vitamin B...but too much lard is a problem too.
