SINGAPORE: The history of Singapore is a matter of concern to all Singaporeans and not just historians, Mr Desmond Lee and Dr Janil Puthucheary said on Tuesday (Apr 10) in response to an opinion piece in the Straits Times by its editor-at-large Han Fook Kwang last weekend.

In their response published in the paper titled "History is not the preserve of historians", the pair took issue with Mr Han's suggestion that "politicians should have no role in interpreting history and that history should be the preserve of only historians".

Mr Han had said that this was because the views of politicians are bound to be coloured by political interests. On the other hand, all historians can be relied on to pronounce authoritatively on the historical 'truth' because they view history objectively.

"This cannot be right," said Mr Lee, who is Social and Family Development Minister, and Dr Puthucheary, who is Senior Minister of State for Education, as well as for Communications and Information.

Sinkies soon make up 25% of population, the history will be who the arsehole who sold sinkies out to FT.

Han Fook Kwang's article was spot on, objective and made total sense. Desmond Lee and Janil Puthucheary can join Shanmugan to form sinkie's very own Three Stooges. Three bloody fools.

If HFK is to talk too much, the Clown Prince will be weeded out just like Kishore.

Han is right. Politicians should not try to interpret history. That is for rulers and their historians.

Just like we seek advice from doctor rather than snake oil seller for health issues. Interpretation of History should be left to the historians and not politicians.

Having said this I do think it unwise for Thum to venture into politics or activism. That will cast some doubts on his partiality as historian. Just stick to his role as an academic is the best path

They are more or less behaving like a attack dog, faithful to their rice bowl. Not necessary to the King. But faithful to the system that bring them to their status now.

Just ask LHY and LWL, they are being brought up in a privilege system, but when the system turn against them. They only have face book to turn to.

If I were his family or friend, I would dissuade him. Just look at what happened to former academic CSJ. We all know Thum has an axe to grind, and rightfully so too. And since I am neither his family nor friend, I would like to see him in oppie politics. He will give the pap a run for their money.

There are certain things that academic are at liberty to do or say that politician can't. I do suggest that Thum stick strictly to his forte and leave activism and politics to others.

Very apt analogy! Snake oil seller is only interested in selling their koyok and therefore they cannot be trusted to be objective. They only want you to hear the right things and say the right things.

Thum has no axe to grind; just setting the education system right

The more I look at him, the more he reminds me of Gilbert Goh.... I can't help it!
